Meet Maggie Sims of Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Sims.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Maggie Sims. I began playing guitar and singing at the age of seven and from that point on, it became my purpose and driving force in life. I wrote my first song at the age of ten and recorded it onto a CD. I remember having so much fun in the studio, even at such a young age. Overtime, I fell in love with the process of songwriting- how I could express myself and my experiences through song and connect to so many other people who have perhaps had similar experiences. I really love that music is the universal, God-given language. Regardless of where you are from, which language you speak- music of any kind makes all of humanity feel so deeply. There is so much beauty in that. I am now 20 years old and am chasing my dreams of being a touring artist. I truly believe in the music I am making in this season of my life and with God by my side, I know anything is possible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting to the place in life where I stand now has not been easy. I have had many challenges that have rocked my faith and my identity. I used to struggle with a lot of insecurity- both internally and externally. My mind would race before I slept, my heart would beat so fast each morning upon waking- I was riddled with uncertainty and had lost touch with God and had lost the reason I fell in love with music to begin with. Life is not always easy or nice, but it is through the struggles I have faced that I have learned the most about myself and what life truly means. To let go of the small, uncontrollable things and embrace the bigger picture.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
While I know one day I will live out my dreams of making music for a living, I am currently a full time college student, which occupies a lot of my time. However, in addition to school and my part-time boutique job, I make music as often as I breathe air. I am particularly a fan of writing lyrics. Lyricism is a form of poetry and to be able to express myself through lyrics and song is a gift. I will often wake up randomly in the middle of the night with an idea on the top of my mind and will record it/write it down so that I can continue working on it in the morning. Music is my fuel- both making it and consuming it. I feel lucky to have been blessed by God with the gift of singing and songwriting.

What makes you happy?
There are so many things that make me happy, but I think as I have gotten older, the more simple things in life make me the happiest. I used to say, “Once I have blank, then I’ll be happy”, “Once I look like blank, then I’ll feel confident” I would always seek more, instead of realizing what I already had and finding joy from the already-existent things in life. I now find so much happiness in the small things- spending time with family, sharing a meaningful moment with a friend, getting in my bed early and watching a favorite film, listening to a favorite song, moving my body in the gym, eating well, praising GOD, and most importantly, seeing others thrive/find happiness is what makes me smile the biggest. I am so grateful for my change in perspective and this life I get to call mine everyday, thanks to the Lord.
