Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Lynn.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a songwriter/artist from Nova Scotia, Canada. Growing up around a family that loved country and folk music, I began writing my own songs around 8 years old. That sent me on a path of performing, touring around Canada, then moving to Nashville, TN when I was 17 to pursue music making. I fell in love with the community of songwriters I got to learn from everyday in Music City and signed my first publishing deal as a songwriter with Keith Stegall’s Dreamlined Entertainment. Now I am working with Wrensong Publishing and Eclipse Music Group. I record my own music as well as write songs with and for other artists. Getting to be a part of both avenues is so fulfilling for me!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t know that anything is ever a smooth road! Of course there are obstacles you face on a daily basis when your job involves creativity and sharing pieces of yourself with others. I think the personal fight I’m always in is about prioritizing the heart of what I want to say in my art. Not letting anything come before the authenticity of it. I think that helps me get through any level of obstacle that comes with the journey.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I’ve always known I loved to sing. Since earlier than I can remember, I was singing. And even still, it really is one of the things that brings me the most stillness in my life. I’ve released some music I’m so proud of out into the world. “Spare A Little Change”, “Oldest Daughter” and “The Dreamer” are a few of my favorites out there so far. Alongside recording my own music, I’ve also been lucky enough to add background vocals to records for artists like Alan Jackson and Trisha Yearwood along with so many other cool music makers of all different genres.
I’ve begun having some of my songs recorded by other artists as well. That can be one of the most difficult mountains to climb these days… there are so many ‘almosts’ for a songwriter. So when a song sees the light of day, it is a wonderful feeling.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Nashville, I can’t feel any other way about it. It’s because of the music community for me. We’re all looking out for one another, learning from each other, celebrating the other’s wins… the circle I’ve ended up in truly feels that way. They’re more friends than co-workers.
The traffic seems to get worse every year around here, so that’s an adjustment! But you pick your battles!
