Meet Mamie Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mamie Turner.

Hi Mamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Mamie Turner, born and raised in Union City, Tennessee to Charles (Deceased) and Lucille Boykin, I am the youngest of 4 siblings. I am now living in Nashville Tennessee, the mother of 4 children one Deceased, and one Granddaughter. In 2010 I started my Nonprofit Healthy Life for healthy families, inc. We empower SELF Sufficiency in families we work with through Health, Education, outreach, and resources. We help inner-city families with our own prenatal classes, instructed by Stork Nest, also we had Universal Baby showers for 4 years. In 2016 I became an Activist, bringing awareness against Gun violence. In 2018 we jumped started on Bullets have no Eyes on July 28, which is now our Tennessee State Observance Day on July 28th.

Bringing awareness against Gun violence. In 2019, I was presented with the official proclamation from Senator Brenda Gilmore. Bullets have no Eyes have recognized many Entrepreneurs with Awards for contributing to their community. The Mayor of my Native hometown Union City, Tennessee presented me with the key to the City in 2022 at Discovery Park of America. I was also presented with a Proclamation for outstanding citizens of Tennessee from the House of Representatives in 2017. I have had many events in my community, like street clean-ups, Halloween fest, Guest speakers, etc. I was named one of the 40 Women named Hoinser Global Women 2023. I have mentored and helped many families all over Tennessee, and being able to encourage myself is something I struggle with on a daily, because of my Chronic pain. But on December 16th, 2020, I received a phone call that my son Lee Vern Turner Jr. Had been Killed by Homicide, by two teenagers.

I fight for Lee’s justice and anyone whose life has been taken by Gun violence. We need to protect our homes, schools, churches, neighborhood, our cities, but most of all we need to come together as a state and fight this thing called Gun Violence. My motto is Step up, Step out, and Make a Change. I also have written two books, I know who I Am and The Black History of Union City Tennessee. I love giving back to my State of Tennessee, I’m just a Beautiful Country Queen learning to give back to my great state of Tennessee.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I had many struggles coming up as a child, I was bullied and called names like black and ugly, and I have Alopecia so I always had short hair. I was called black Baldhead and ugly only by people that look like me. But I overcame that and wrote my first book, I know who I am.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My will is to help others and give guidance to whoever reaches out to me. I’m very different from others, I don’t cling to a lot of people, but I let my light shine and it attracts many who feel my spirit. I’m very spiritual.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I’m already global most know me and follow me on social media. I would like all the other states to join in with bullets have no eyes.
