Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Haycraft.
Hi Maria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. What started as a creative outlet grew into a lifelong passion and eventually a career centered around creating, teaching, and connecting with others through art.
My journey as an artist has been closely intertwined with my faith. Through every season, God has used art to teach me, challenge me, and remind me of His presence. My faith has given me the courage to keep creating, take risks, and trust the path He has placed before me, even when I couldn’t see where it was leading.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to create public art, teach others, and be part of a creative community that values expression and connection. More than anything, being an artist has taught me to see beauty, possibility, and purpose in the world around me. I’m grateful for the journey so far and excited to continue growing both as an artist and as a person of faith.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Like many artists, I’ve faced periods of self-doubt, financial challenges, and the constant pressure of balancing creativity with the realities of everyday life. There were times when opportunities were limited, projects didn’t go as planned, and I questioned whether I was on the right path.
One of the biggest struggles has been learning to believe in myself and my work. As an artist, it’s easy to compare yourself to others or feel discouraged when things aren’t progressing as quickly as you’d hoped. I’ve also had to learn how to step outside of my comfort zone, put my work out into the world, and accept that not everyone will connect with it.
At the same time, those challenges have helped shape who I am. They’ve taught me perseverance, humility, and the importance of continuing to create even when the path ahead isn’t clear. My faith has played a huge role in helping me navigate those seasons, reminding me to trust God’s plan and keep moving forward. Looking back, the struggles have been just as important as the successes because they’ve made me a stronger artist and person.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work centers around creating art that is both visually impactful and accessible to the community. I am best known for my murals and stenciled artwork, which allow me to transform spaces and tell stories through bold imagery and design. I love the challenge of creating large-scale pieces that not only beautify a space but also create a sense of connection and pride for the people who experience them.
In addition to my own artwork, I teach stained glass at ArtLink, which has become one of the most rewarding parts of my creative journey. Teaching allows me to share my passion for art while helping others build confidence, learn new skills, and discover their own creative voice.
What I’m most proud of is the impact my work has had beyond the artwork itself. Seeing a community embrace a mural, watching a student complete their first stained glass piece, or inspiring someone to try something creative for the first time means more to me than any individual project.
I think what sets me apart is that I approach art as both a creator and an educator. While I love making art, I’m equally passionate about helping others experience the joy of creating. Whether I’m painting a mural, designing a stencil piece, or teaching in the studio, my goal is always to create meaningful experiences that bring people together through art.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe perseverance has been the most important factor in my success. Talent and creativity are important, but the ability to keep showing up, keep learning, and keep creating through challenges has made the biggest difference in my journey. There have been times when opportunities were scarce, projects were difficult, or self-doubt crept in, but I’ve learned that growth happens when you continue moving forward despite those obstacles.
My faith has also played a significant role in that perseverance. It has taught me to trust the process, remain patient, and stay focused on my purpose rather than immediate results. Combined with a willingness to keep learning and adapting, that persistence has allowed me to grow as both an artist and an educator and has opened doors I never expected.
