Meet Maricia Beach of Peace in Mind Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maricia Beach.

Hi Maricia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. I have always wanted to own my own business because my father owned one years before I was born. I just didn’t know what I wanted the business to be. Initially, I opted for fashion design, but when I showed no interest in sewing, I knew I had to move on. During a relatively stressful time in my life after having my first daughter and being a single mother, I was experiencing panic attacks and had low boundaries with my family. After I was referred through my employee assistance program to a therapist for the first time, I really started seeing relief and even processed some of my unresolved grief from the passing of my dad a decade earlier. It was then that I decided that I wanted to help people through their own pain and make them feel as supported as I did during that rough time in my life. I went back to school, finished my business degree at Tennessee State University, and immediately enrolled in an online school for my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. I feel like this was the best decision I ever made.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business from scratch with no capital and no supporting staff was difficult, but one day while on a video call with my licensure supervisor, I literally jumped out of the chair and announced I was starting my own private practice. I was still working for another employer during that time so I had some extra money coming in while I was building. I saw my very first client couple via telehealth on Friday, October 13, 2023 and I remember feeling very proud and independent. I worked another job after I left the one I had initially, but eventually I went 100% independent in my practice without any other source of income and it has been truly a test of faith. It has been awesome seeing my private practice grow, clients leave and come in, and having full control over my content creation, finances, and marketing. It has not always been stress-free, but I have never felt too overwhelmed to get back in and try again. I show up for my clients because I know they need me to and having autonomy and freedom over my schedule and other things, makes this journey all the more rewarding for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Peace in Mind Counseling is a solo private practice located in Clarksville, Tennessee that serves the state of Tennessee by providing trauma-informed care, recovery, and education to both adult couples and individuals in person and telehealth. I specialize in couples counseling and have been extensively trained in trauma-focused models that support those who have experienced early childhood and adolescent trauma from the ages of 0-18 years old. I have been in the mental health field for approximately 9 years and I truly enjoy seeing my clients move from questioning everything about themselves because of the traumatic experiences they have gone through to them fully loving themselves because of the healing they have received. What sets me apart from other trauma therapists is my honesty, authenticity, and ability to advocate for the same in my clients. I create a comfortable and accepting space where clients are invited to truly be themselves without judgment or ridicule. I produce my own content on Instagram and YouTube and I am proud of the thousands of views I receive from both platforms. I am currently accepting clients for both in-person and telehealth mental health therapy appointments in Tennessee and I accept all major health insurance plans except for Medicare and Medicaid. I also offer private pay rates for those who do not have their own insurance.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I am the fifth of five children and I have always had a huge imagination because I was always left behind while my siblings hung out with their friends. This helped me develop a personality of resilience and adaptability and also encouraged my independence. I used to be an avid reader and my siblings used to call me a, “nerd’ because I liked doing homework, spelling, and math equations. I have never had a lot of friends, but those I do have stick around for a while. One thing I recognize that I used to do as a child that has helped me in my career is the way I was so upfront and honest (sometimes rude!) with folks about their situations as early as 6 years old. Another aspect of my personality that I know has helped me as a therapist is the fact that people feel comfortable talking to me and I have always heard, “I feel like I’ve known you all of my life”. I love to listen to people’s narratives and apparently, people feel comfortable telling their stories to me.
