Meet Marquita Gipson of Memphis and Surrounding Cities

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquita Gipson

Hi Marquita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story is simple, I was obedient with my gifts. Girls that Glitter Inc originated from what I thought was a one time thing. I wanted to celebrate my 30th birthday with a free event for 30 girls in the community. This event was to focus on self-love, confidence and anti-bullying. Here we are almost 7 years later thriving and continue to impact the lives of girls and young women ages 7-21. The mission of Girls that Glitter Inc has flourished and continues to evolve.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would not necessarily call it a challenge or a struggle but, the non-profit space is a scary one. Over the years, I have partnered, networked and attended trainings to make our mentorship’s impactful for our young ladies. One thing I have to had to learn, was not to compare our growth and success to other organizations.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Girls that Glitter Inc is a mentoring organization for girls ages 7-21. Our mission is to encourage, empower and motivate young ladies in boosting their confidence self-esteem and self-love. We do this by mentoring through the 5 Pillars. Those pillars are empowerment, self-confidence, leadership and relationship building and community involvement. That is what sets us apart. Our program allows for us to be creative with implementing tools and practices with our mentors. Our Glitter Girl 2.0 programs is offered to young ladies in college and in transition after high school.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
We have been committed to keeping the girls at the forefront in all that we do. If it is not going to enhance, impact or help the girls achieve individual success we are not aligned with it. Through the 5 pillars we help young ladies create their own opportunities for life success, through contributing to the community as young leaders guided by mentors, who are dedicated to expanding their horizons.
