Today we’d like to introduce you to Marta Albarracin.
Hi Marta, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I remember always loving music, but growing up in Guatemala, I never realized songwriting was a career; I would try to write songs but the experiences a 6-year-old had would never compare to those that artists on the radio would sing about and I kept my songwriting as a secret.
In my teens I recall a friend came back from an exchange program and presented me with a cd: Garth Brooks’ The Hits, and said “you HAVE to listen to this”. I remember vividly that I went back home from school, sat in the living room next to the cd player and began listening to every song… they would reel me in but when I heard Unanswered Prayers my understanding of music changed completely. I was blown away and knew I needed to make songs like that one. That was my first encounter with Country Music.
Fast forward to some 7 years ago, I felt I needed to be in Nashville because I wanted to be in an environment of writers and seeing how “normal” hit-songwriters are, was a confirmation that this is the path I should be walking.
A dear friend of mine, Marcela Eicher (a very talented Salsa singer-songwriter in town) invited me to a songwriting worksop…turns out Pat Alger -who wrote Unanswered Prayers- would be leading the class. As if this wasn’t a full circle moment already, Pat and I have become friends and co-writers.
Around the time I came to town, I began posting songs on Youtube and social media, as a way to have an easy-access catalog, it was never the intention to grow followers or reach virality, however, life once again had a surprise for me; I woke up one day to find that one of my songs was viral. The next month I released another one and it too went viral, two months later another one…and that one went viral as well! All of this was very unexpected but exciting and as a songwriter it’s a big reward to see your songs really reaching the hearts of people, without having a label or marketing arm to pushing you. 100% organic love!
I wrapped 2024 with 8 viral songs and 2025 greeted me with a viral song released in February.
What’s most rewarding about this is that all of these songs speak about normal life blessings: Family, motherhood, true love and self esteem. I feel that If more people realize how much they have by enjoying a normal life, the world is going to be a much happier place.
Mi Regalo, a song I wrote to my daughters, has been the most beloved one so far and I’ve released my first children’s book based on this sweet tune that has become an anthem for all moms.
I have nothing but gratitude to Music City for all it gives me; first off, the encouragement and example of writers who have succeeded in this career, the magic that lives in writers’ rounds, the opportunity to write Latin Country songs that are loved around the world and feeling welcomed in a city full of talent through awesome invitations to perform with The Nashville Symphony and being a songwriting mentor at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum.
I’m blessed to share my songs and see how, with patience, those “Unanswered Prayers” might just be meant to be answered after all!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the toughest thing is developing patience and keep on believing something will happen after years of not seeing anything. It’s easier said than done but it does payoff to be constant and remember you’re doing what you do because you love it.
Music has an interesting way to keep you going; writing another song becomes a reward in itself, you feel like something amazing has just happened as you witness a the birth of a song that moved you. It’s a joy that makes you forget what you have yet to reach, so in my case, since I write all the time, my cup is always full!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I feel I came to this world to be happy. I have gone through many very tough moments such as having my daughter in the hospital for some time, but I feel the love that surrounds and fills me is way bigger and stronger than the difficult moments. I see how in time everything falls into place. I have a wonderful family who supports me and miraculous experiences that keep happening, therefore all I can do is give thanks,
I think that’s what I bring to the plate: songs that come from the heart to the heart.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think all my life has been full of risks; My dad was a Mechanical-Electric engineer, my mom a psycologist, my sisters an Attorney and a Hospitalist Doctor…and I write songs. I was the only one who didn’t follow the line of traditional career paths and jumped into one that doesn’t really have a pattern to follow. I’m basically breaking ground in my own story.
The risk of continuing to do something that doesn’t bring results in a timely manner, the risk of investing in ways to learn and perfect your craft, co-produce, record and release your product without yet having an audience or demand for it is pretty crazy. But when you see an estimate of 1,000 people being added to your following every 2 days, when you start reading the utmost heart-felt comments of what your business (in my case, songs) is doing in the life of people in a very deep way, when you see how you become part of people’s life events and routines you know the risk was worth taking!
