Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Kenny.
Hi Martha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Nashville in 2017 and dove headfirst into the music industry. I began studying music business at Belmont University and became enamored with the creative complexities of the recording industry. I took unpaid internships and jobs at a wide variety of entertainment-related companies, ranging from booking to PR, to radio promotion, and more.
In 2019, I began managing an independent label based on instrumental music. Learning label operations from the inside out gave me a unique perspective on the music release process, and allowed me to begin to identify what actions make certain releases more successful than others.
When it came time to graduate from Belmont in 2020, the owner of that label recommended that I start my own business consulting with additional labels and artists.
From there, I was able to pull the actionable knowledge I learned from my internships and classes to craft my own business model based on what I felt truly makes a difference when releasing music on streaming platforms.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It certainly hasn’t always been a smooth road. When I graduated from college in 2020, there was no live music due to the pandemic, and most companies were laying people off rather than hiring.
While I had always had an entrepreneurial spirit, the idea of stepping out on my own right out of school was daunting. Had it not been for COVID, I likely would not have had the means or bravery to take the leap of faith and start Cadence.
Fifteen months later with over 200 completed campaigns – I can’t imagine doing anything else. CMS has filled me with a sense of purpose and confidence that continues to push my self-growth while the business grows as well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Cadence Music Strategies crafts individualized campaigns to streamline music releases and help artists achieve their goals. In a world where 50,000 songs a day are uploaded to Spotify and 90% of the market is controlled by major labels, it can feel impossible for independent artists to be noticed.
At Cadence, we study the streaming algorithms and release marketing tactics to optimize releases, and assist artists with the administrative work that goes along with each release. Our services include a full release administration package, as well as a la carte release services.
Services include Distribution, Release Sheet Creation, Editorial Submissions, Third Party PR, Social Media Consultations, Lyric Video creations, DSP Profile Maintenance, User Playlisting, and more.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success is not about money, it’s about empowerment. I try to empower my team and clients at every turn and bring something positive to every interaction.
I want to be an advocate for artists, and contribute positively to the streaming ecosystem. If I can lead a profitable business based on integrity and kindness, then that is my marker of success.
