Meet Martha Morales Purucker of Nashville, TN (Germantown)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Morales Purucker

Hi Martha , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Mexico City, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts. I spent many years working within culinary teams. Growing up in a culturally rich background, I was surrounded by art created by great art Masters. I was never given a real chance to be hands on creating art, just observing until I discovered Kilnformed glass in 2014. Since then, I have learned much through my work with several glass and mosaic masters and other art mentors. I have created art with different art mediums like kilnforming glass, stained glass, mosaic, paint and sculpting.

I create, design, collaborate and teach art in glass, mosaic and sculpture. Spanish is my first language, growing up as a hard of hearing, and then deaf was a challenge in every way, I became fluent in English while studying abroad as a kid. Earned my Bachelor’s degree, traveled, worked my internship in the US and worked for many years while deaf. I was able to hear again after being implanted with a Cochlear Implant. This has shaped how I interact, work and collaborate with people.

In 2022, I co-founded a business that has since evolved to what is now my solo venture Glassville, a teaching studio where I share my love for glass art with others.

My art has been on display at, Arts at the Airport and TN Craft Midstate “Identity Crisis: Who are we becoming” “Marisol”. ABC and NSC 2023 Soundwaves Gallery at Geodis “Nashville in Rhythm” “Dancing Flowers”. Cochlear Americas Headquarters Lobby “Inspire Us” “Mc Cochlear Implant”.

In 2021 I Collaborated with studio owner and glass artis Betty Turney Turner, mosaic artis and teacher Beth Volz and Alfred Turney. “Pathway to a Higher Note” Community project to celebrate Juneteenth. Displayed at The Curb Center and to be installed at Centennial Community Center.

My dedication to the craft has been recognized with the 2023 Best Showcase award by the Art and Business Council of Greater Nashville, and I am an alumna of the Periscope program, class of 2023.

My selection for the emerging makers tent at TNCraft in Spring 2023, Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 further highlights my commitment to innovation and artistic excellence.

2024 My fused glass pieces “Collection of Cascades: Morado y Azul” and “Winter” stained glass have been on display at the Appalachian Center for Craft, where I also taught a sold-out class.

My piece “Springtime Whispers” was exhibited at The COOP Gallery for the “Garden of Earthly Delights.”
Additionally, my piece “I’m Still Here” was on exhibit at the Red225 Art Gallery for the “Intimacism” exhibit.
“Fiery Reflection” is currently on exhibit at Visual Minds, Inc.

In addition to these achievements, I was selected to be a panelist for Metro Arts for the Lending Library, further showcasing my expertise and involvement in the local arts community.

In August 2024, I attended Pilchuck Glass School to further refine my skills in lost wax and core casting techniques. My ongoing dedication to glass art and my ability to inspire others continue to shape my artistic journey.

Exhibited “Marisol” at the TNCraft at the Centennial Art Center in September 2024 as part of the “Art of Craft” exhibit.
Showcased five pieces “La Guadalupana,” “Huichol Mandala,” “Frida”, “Alebrije,” and “Muñeca María”) at the “International Artist” exhibit in October 2024 at the Centennial Art Center.

In October 2024, I was elected Vice President of The Midstate Chapter of TNCraft, further demonstrating my commitment to the community and the craft of teaching.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a bumpy road, to say the least. Life, with its many twists and turns, threw me a curveball when I was told I would become deaf at the age of 14. This experience taught me that life is a journey full of lessons, both good and bad. It’s through overcoming challenges and stepping outside of our comfort zones that we truly grow. My fear of rejection, failure, and not measuring up to my peers pushed me to face life’s punches head-on, grieve, and then take one step at a time, sometimes even two or three steps back. At times, I’ve had to completely change course and approach situations differently.

At the same time, I have experienced so much joy, met wonderful people, discovered amazing art and places, and witnessed incredible talent from around the world. I cherish both the little moments and the big milestones.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
