Meet Matt McGee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt McGee.

Matt McGee

Hi Matt, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I never really felt like I had any artistic ability, but after I purchased a camera for my career as a dentist, I started to play around with it to see what I could do with it. I started getting some good images of people, nature, and architecture and soon realized that I had a talent for this. Photography was a great outlet for me because it allowed me to use technology to create art.

It allowed me to put four walls around a scene or an object and force the viewer to see things through my eyes. Oddly enough, my first real subjects were found underwater, sharks specifically. I traveled all over the world to photograph as many sharks as I could and eventually started photographing smaller underwater animals. After a while, I felt like I wanted to pursue a subject that didn’t require me to be underwater, and I turned my focus to landscapes.

I’ve always liked the cold, so I soon focused on Iceland. There is so much variety in a relatively small location that looks like another planet. I photographed the landscape from the ground as well as the sky as I used a drone, and I also did photography from an airplane. the abstract patterns of the rivers when photographed from the sky are one of my favorite subjects. In between, I found time to photograph models underwater as well. I’ve photographed a little bit of everything.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road, but it hasn’t been super bumpy either. It has just taken me a lot of time. Not just in the field shooting, but also learning about different subjects, and dealing with the different environments when shooting.

It’s not just a matter of understanding light and composition, I’ve also had to contend with scuba diving, deep water, currents, cold temperatures, and harsh winds and precipitation. This requires being prepared for different conditions. It’s not just shooting in a studio.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think what sets me apart from others is the variety in my work and the uniqueness of it. Not a lot of people have spent a lot of time photographing sharks, models underwater, or remote locations in the Arctic.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
For me, my work in photography has been about documenting our world and sharing my vision of it, as well as the journey to these locations.

Our world is an incredibly beautiful place, and I hope that viewers find my vision of it pleasing and that it makes them have an appreciation for our planet.
