Meet Matthew Simmons of East

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Simmons.

Hi Matthew, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in a small town outside of Dayton, Ohio. My dad is an art director and fine artist, and my parents encouraged me to become an artist from the start. I initially wanted to follow my dad and become a graphic designer, but I quickly realized in college that I was more interested in pursuing photography. I moved to Nashville in 2012 to start working as a lighting assistant. I wanted to get experience working on commercial sets before I started shooting full-time. I worked for many great photographers and learned a lot during that time. In 2016 I stopped assisting and started shooting full-time. I photograph mostly portraits and work in the music and advertising world. In 2020 I was signed to Jenny Reps, an agency for photographers and directors. Right now, I focus on working more with brands and locking in projects with clients so I can build great and lasting relationships. I hope to continue growing as an artist and a business owner.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most of my peers, my road has been tough. The pandemic hit me hard. I lost many clients already booked out for that spring and summer, and the road back to normal took forever. I’ve been playing catch-up ever since, and I’m ready for things to smooth back out!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I photograph creative portraits of musicians, artists, celebrities, business owners, fashion models, etc. Whoever needs their photo taken, I’ll probably do it. It’s hard to talk about what sets my work apart, but I think what brings clients back to me is that I like to make everyone happy. From the client to the lighting assistants, I want everyone treated well and to have a good time while on set with me. I always make sure my clients get what they asked for,
