Today we’d like to introduce you to McKenzie Williams.
Hi McKenzie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I went to the University of Alabama from 2017-to 2021 and majored in Broadcast Journalism with a concentration in Sports. During my time at UA, I interned at WVUA23, a news station located inside Bryant-Denny Stadium, where I covered a wide variety of sports throughout the university and local high schools. I worked in front of the camera, interviewing athletes and coaches, and behind the camera, editing video, photography, writing stories, etc. I LOVED my internship and everything that went into the news/television/entertainment industry.
My now fiance and high school sweetheart were playing baseball at Mississippi State during that time. Our junior year of college in 2020 happened, and we all know how that went down. However, my fiance was drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft to the Texas Rangers in June of that year and began his professional career. Meanwhile, I downloaded TikTok and started making videos during quarantine (this ties in later). Due to COVID transferring from in-person schooling to online, I was able to travel with him to his first Spring Training in Arizona at the beginning of 2021. I finished up my last semester of college while we were in Arizona, and we were discussing what life was going to look like for us after I graduated.
We had done long-distance for two and a half years in college and knew we wanted to be together during baseball season to experience this lifestyle together. After going through many scenarios about what I would do for work and how we would travel together, we decided to take a leap of faith and ride the wave of life. In April of 2021, I went back to Alabama to graduate and move out of my college house and then immediately went back to the baseball life,
As I mentioned earlier, I was making TikToks during quarantine and had gained a decent following on the app. While being together was the most important thing, I needed something to pour into myself and provide some income for us. I quickly realized that content creation on all of my social media platforms was very similar to what I was doing in my internship and major. I worked with a camera, was on camera, edited videos, took pictures, etc. I also discovered that I could incorporate other elements of my life into my videos and photos, such as my fashion style, beauty products, fitness, health, and now my wedding planning.
The more videos I made, the larger my following grew. I started taking my social media platforms seriously and earning an income from them. That’s my full-time job now, and I love what I do. I took a leap of faith and prioritized my relationship and my individual needs, which led me to organically find a passion, hobby, and job all in one.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. There have been some bumps along the way as the baseball lifestyle is challenging, and we are in our early twenties trying to discover ourselves. More than anything, there was just faith that it would all work out and a go-with-the-flow mentality.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
It can be surface-level to say, “I post on TikTok and Instagram for a living.” At the core, that’s what I do, but so much more goes into it—figuring out my target audience, coming up with a strategy, holding myself accountable and staying motivated as I am my boss, and also learning as I go as this industry is still very new.
My content is a melting pot of a lot of different things. I share my fashion style, make-up products, anything beauty-related, all of my wedding planning details, travel, restaurant reviews, baseball lifestyle, advocating for mental health, there’s so much more.
I think that’s what makes me stand out. I don’t have a “niche,” I touch on many different aspects of life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I feel like luck is a mentality. I’m very positive for the most part and accept change and obstacles with open arms even when it’s tough. Therefore, I’m open to whatever life throws at me and always try to grow through what I go through. This creates room for opportunity in every life situation, which is the mentality of luck.
