Meet Meg Healy of Margaret Ray Interiors, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Healy.

Hi Meg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am the founder of an innovative interior design company committed to creating inclusive spaces for neurodivergent children and adults. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, I followed my passion for knowledge into teaching Biology and Physical Science at a specialized school for students with learning differences, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and other diagnoses. While teaching, I discovered my curiosity about the physical learning environment and how simple changes in lighting, music, sound, and configuration had such a profound impact on the energy in the room. I spent countless hours designing my classroom to ensure environmental support, researching the intersection between interior design and neurodiversity. It was my goal that no student would lose out on a lesson due to a sensory issue that the classroom itself was not supporting. After talking with families that I worked with about their specific needs and how their current spaces may be failing them, I decided to start a business focused on designing spaces for neurodivergent clients and families in Tennessee.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been amazed by how welcoming people in the Nashville community have been, and how excited they are to meet with me and discuss making this business into something that has a large impact. I have been able to collaborate with experts in both the fields of psychology and interior design, which has been incredibly inspiring to me on this journey. Choosing to leave my job in education was a difficult decision, but knowing that I will continue to work with the families and students similar to those I taught has helped me push forward with my vision of designing spaces that support everyone.

We’ve been impressed with Margaret Ray Interiors, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our 90-minute, in person walk through is my favorite service we offer. It really helps kick off the process, especially for anyone who knows that they need a change but hasn’t yet decided on a vision. We will provide you with knowledge and research in the areas you wish to improve your home design, offering suggestions and problem solving. You will receive a custom design board with specific textiles, colors, products, and more that can be integrated into your home to create harmony. The best part- no need to tidy up for us! We want to see where the natural friction in your home is with your day-to-day life and how it’s currently working for you … or not.

Ultimately, our design services are for anyone who feels like their space is holding them back. We intentionally specialize in designing spaces for neurodivergent clients and families. However, in the same way that ramps for wheelchairs also support strollers, suitcases, and moving furniture, universal design benefits everyone. We are excited to work with anyone interested in our design services focused on creating beautiful, functional spaces that are balanced between all five senses.

What does success mean to you?
If you’ve ever been sitting in a restaurant and couldn’t hear the person across from you because of the loud chatter in the room, then you’ve experienced a design that has failed you. Success in design is often defined by what you don’t notice- an environment that works with you and doesn’t get in your way. I define success by helping individuals and families live in harmony with their environment. Eliminating barriers and strategically designing a space to support someone can be life-changing. Home should feel like a breath of relief when you enter, not a continual struggle. An environment that works with you and for you benefits everyone who enters!
