Meet Megan Fanthorpe of Yorkville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Fanthorpe.

Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been interested in social media, design, and creation. I started social media in 2020 during the pandemic. Like most people, I was just making TikToks for fun with my husband Stefan and our dog Rocky. I’ve always enjoyed creative things, so creating short form videos and video editing came very naturally to me and was a lot of fun. For example, before diving into social media, a lot of my creativity was geared toward crafting, which is a hobby of mine, and I also design curriculums during my full-time job as a corporate trainer. I started using TikTok, Instagram, and now YouTube more seriously after a few videos from my ‘Things to Know Before 30’ and ‘HOA Karen’ series went viral. In my ‘Things to Know Before 30’ series, I share life tips, tricks, and fun facts I’ve gained throughout my life. My real life inspired my HOA Karen story. My husband and I went through a negative experience attempting to get a fence for our dog. Many of my followers could relate to having a negative experience with their homeowners association or just enjoyed seeing our journey to get a fence for our dog. Now I continue to share ‘Things to Know Before 30’, home or style finds that I love and think others might love too, and mix it in with some marriage and over 30 humor. I’m lucky that I grew an amazing community of fun-loving people who are having fun with my content and sharing their experiences with me too. While it’s not my full-time job, I’ve made some terrific friends, shared the experience with my wonderful husband (He is so supportive, which I appreciate!), and hope I am continuing to help people learn something new or make them laugh.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge is that content creation isn’t my full-time job. I only create outside of working hours during my free time, which isn’t much compared to full-time creators. I often want to share more, respond to questions or comments, or have more time to create the best quality content possible, but I just run out of time in the day. Also, while I have the most wonderful people on my pages, many of which I’ve been lucky enough to become good friends with a learn about as well, there are always going to be some people who are negative in your comments. That can be hard to see sometimes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The main social media platform that I create content on is TikTok. But I’ve also been consistently sharing on Instagram and YouTube. Hopefully, my husband and I will also be starting a podcast soon!

I’m most proud of being brave enough to get in front of a camera. Ironically part of why I started making some TikToks was to become more comfortable on camera. Zoom became a daily reality, and I had a lot of anxiety about being on camera. I thought if I could make being on camera fun by making fun videos with my husband and sharing them, Zoom calls would become a breeze! I could have never imagined it would turn into such a wonderful experience, but I encourage everyone to get out of their comfort zone and try something new because you can do things you never thought would be possible. I was also excited that a few videos had gone viral. One went so viral that many articles were written about the video in the UK! I was completely shocked, but it was a very cool experience! What sets me apart is that this isn’t a full-time job for me. I love sharing tips and tricks, things I think other people will love, or things that will make them laugh. Social media is where I can just be myself, make new friends, and learn daily.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
It’s okay to ignore negative comments. Not everyone will love everything you do or say, and that’s okay.
