Meet Milly Roze

Today we’d like to introduce you to Milly Roze.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hey, Milly here! I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer. I started singing around the age of five. The first songs I ever wrote were on my Barbie karaoke machine. Ha! As I grew older, I was a part of the school choir and also took music lessons. I remember around the age of 11, my parents started buying me CDs. The very first artist that inspired me were singers like Christina Aguilera, destiny’s Child, and brandy. My mom is a guitar player and always plays music like heart and Jimi Hendrix. Mixing pop culture, rock music, and doing my research on R&B really pave the way to who I am today.

I moved to Nashville, Tennessee, around the age of seven. My mom brought me here from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to find a better life. I never knew my biological father but the man that raised me, Jerome Nicolas, helped my mom through this transition. Shortly after moving here, he found a newspaper article for WO Smith music school. It was and still is based on an income music school for young children. I always wanted to take piano lessons, and this place pulled me in as a family. This is where the dive into me being an artist and really going for a professional career in music started.

As a teenager, I met two girls named Kortney Owens and Phantasia Thomas.

We started a singing group, and this is where I was introduced to recording in an actual studio and working with producers. We also did performances in Nashville and Atlanta. This was where I learned about what being an artist really takes. We ended up going our separate ways but are still best friends today.

I decided to go to college and get a degree in music production. I began my solo career and was able to incorporate everything I’ve learned since I had moved to Nashville into my own craft. I worked with a few different producers here in Nashville while trying to find my sound. In 2016 my song lonely summer gained 1 million plays across all streaming platforms. I still felt there was something missing, though, so I began to take what I had learned through the years and produce my own content.

Today, I have a home studio where I produce, write and record my own music. I still love collaborating with others, but the feeling of fully creating a canvas makes me feel whole.

I am also a mother of a beautiful two-year-old and married. My family life is very important to me; it helps keep my music career feel purposeful.

This year 2021, I have a Self Produced EP coming. The very first single Garden was released in June. The second single, Freedom, will be released on July 23. I’m just so excited to share with the world who I am and what I love. Music should be healing not only to ourselves but to others. I believe what we resonate with also resonates in our art. The universe is within us all.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve dealt with questioning my music direction, my sound, and my image. There is so much pressure when being an artist these days; if you don’t have a lot of resources, you have to be your resource. Meaning wearing all the hats. It’s really hard, but I’ve learned to trust the process and ask for help when I need it.

I also have had run-ins with producers who didn’t share the same vision as me and maybe felt what they wanted was best. I was really hurt by one specifically who I will not name, but it broke me for a few years. I had to really gain my trust back with collaborating. This was a turning point in learning more about the music business. I also had to ask myself how I could have handled this differently. It changed my view on what I want for myself. I now just want to be surrounded by people who are whole within themselves apart from music. I just want art to be art. Art is a freedom of expression. I am healed from my musical past and just now want making music to be FUN! If it’s not fun, why do it ??!!! I needed all of my low times to be able to find the best me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer. I love music and creating from a blank canvas. Pop and R&b have been my main genres, but I rather not box myself in. I just love the melody and sitting in a room creating. I am also a very ethereal being, so nature and frequency in my music is important. I like to incorporate the universe in all I do going forward.

What sets me apart is my view on sound, emotion, and vibration. All music can create an emotion. My music is conscious in a way you wouldn’t recognize right away. It can be healing and can also bring out a part of you that you didn’t know was there.

How do you define success?
Success is a mindset. I believe that looking within is more important than looking outward. I cannot be happy by looking for validation from others. I can only be happy by truly being whole within. Art helps us reach this place. It’s about full abundance within. That’s a success, doing what you love happily. Now, I wouldn’t mind a mansion one day, don’t get me wrong! Ha! But that mansion can’t make me happy if I’m miserable inside. I’m only successful if I’m joyful.
