Meet Nickola Magnolia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nickola Magnolia.

Hi Nickola, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As far back as I can remember, I’ve been writing songs. But the way I began performing was definitely by happenstance. I’m actually a tattoo artist by trade, and wrote songs for personal reasons, they helped me deal with whatever was going on in my life. It wasn’t until I was sitting around a campfire with friends playing guitar, that I played one of my own songs. A friend of mine who is a producer and a guitar player noticed that he hadn’t heard those songs before and he asked if it was my own. I told him it was, and when he asked if I had any more I said “yeah I’ve got whole journals full of them” He later convinced me to record some of them and send them to him. I sent 16 songs and he chose 12. We recorded an album of those twelve songs, with no intentions except to make good music.

At this point, I hadn’t ever performed. Laying down the vocals on the bed tracks was the first time I ever played with a band. We recorded one song, Boken Lonesome live off the floor, and it was the closest thing to a live show I had played at that point, which was in 2019. But we did it all during the pandemic, and the next thing I knew I had a fully mixed and mastered country album, and the world was shut down. I didn’t know how to release it, and I had nowhere to play it. So I sat on it for a few years and release it in February 2022, and the first thing I did was hired some friends as my first band to play my first show, my Album release party. 130 friends showed up to watch us play the album, and I fell in love with the stage. That was in May, and I haven’t stepped off since.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’m just getting started, and nothing I’ve ever done has been easy, learning to tattoo 8 years ago, entering into an old boys club wasn’t easy, becoming a painter in a foreign country wasn’t easy, and I have no expectations of making a name for myself in music will be easy. So has it been smooth, absolutely not, and that’s fine with me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a country artist, singer-songwriter, and tattooer. I’ve never tried to be like anyone else but myself, to be honest, I don’t think I could try even if I wanted to. I remember having the inclination as a teen to be like others but failed miserably. I always stood out like a sore thumb.

Whether it be my style, my personality my choices, I’ve never fit in, and I’ve grown to appreciate that about myself.

I’m okay with going against the grain. I think what sets me apart is that I am unapologetically

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how small Nashville is but how big it can feel. For such a tiny place it’s so full of adventure and creativity. You never know what you’re going to walk into. The amount of talent and passion and creativity for such a small place makes it pretty damn special.
