Meet Paul Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Martin.

Hi Paul, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My father started a recording studio in our home in the mid-1960s. I started out as the drummer in my parents’ band and played in many recording sessions at his studio from a very young age. Played around my hometown area of Central Kentucky, and after my college years, I joined the country/pop group Exile in 1988 as lead vocalist and lead guitarist. During those years I met my wife Jamie.

She is the daughter of Oak Ridge Boys’ lead singer Duane Allen and Grand Ol Opry staff vocalist Norah Lee Allen. After Exile stopped touring in the mid 90’s I pursued a solo career. After that time, I went on to play with several other country artists such as Kathy Mattea, Oak Ridge Boys, and Steve Wariner. I got off of the road in the early 2000s to help raise my family. I have had my own recording studio for many years, and it was during this period of time I got some music in major motion pictures and network TV shows.

By 2007, our family had grown to 4 children. We have two boys and two girls. In 2008 I joined Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives. In my seven years in his band, we taped six seasons of a TV show that still airs to this day on the RFDTV Network. It was during this time my four children began to find a passion for music much like mine and Jamie’s. In 2010, we started out playing a few local shows per year with our kids.

Vince Gill had jokingly called us “The Martin Family Circus” at the Opry around 2007, so we decided to go with that name and used it for several years. I left Marty’s band in early 2015 to pursue doing this music thing with my family. In the past seven years, we have played many fairs, festivals, and even The White House, Library of Congress, Grand Ol Opry, and the Country Music Hall Of fame.

We decided to change the name of the band to Rockland Road in 2018 as the kids were starting to write and were maturing as musicians and singers, plus it seemed that when we showed up at fairs to perform and told them our name “Martin Family Circus,”, they would immediately want to direct us to the animal barns. We released our first single “Caroline” under our new name in early 2020, and just as we felt it was gaining momentum for us, the pandemic took that away.

All 4 of our children continued to write and record nonstop during these uncertain times. They are even starting to get songs they have written recorded by other artists now. As of 2022, we are adding more and more live shows to our calendar. We released a single early last year called “Feels Like This,” and we released our latest single“Mountains Up Ahead.” in late February 2022.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has never been smooth, but I believe that is how life works no matter what vocation you choose to make your living with. I wake up thankful every day that I have been able to make my living doing what I love most. Now I do it with the people I love the most! Truly a win/win situation.

I have played and sang on several hit records, and even won a Grammy while with Marty Stuart. Those have been wonderful accomplishments, and it’s those particular things that help keep you from losing sight of why you would even make this journey. At this point in my life, I wouldn’t change one thing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a young boy, I became a multi-instrumentalist while working in my father’s recording studio. I have also been a recording engineer and producer for many years. I have played lots of different genres from Bluegrass, country, and Gospel to Heavy Metal I still take everything I do very seriously and continue to try to learn new things about every aspect of the music business.

I study every genre of music to try and understand what is being done to create that particular sound. I am proud of the fact I am known to be easy to get along with, also a hard worker, and when called to play a certain instrument or sing backing vocals, the client seems to always be happy with what I have added to their project.

As a father of 4 children who are extremely talented artists in their own right, I have always tried to nurture them with love, truth, and guidance without being the typical “stage parent.” I have told them that having remarkable talent is wonderful, but without a strong work ethic to go along with it, you might not get to fulfill your dreams. I am very proud of each of them and their efforts.

What are your plans for the future?
The goal is to get the band Rockland Road to a sustainable level of success where we are able to tour in a consistent fashion. All four kids (ages 23,20,16, and 14) are individual artists that are emerging at a pretty rapid pace. Each will be releasing their own projects in the near future, and we will provide the musical backing in our live shows. My vision has always been akin to the old Dick Clark Caravan Of Stars shows from the 60s.

There would be a backing band and the artist would come out and sing their current single. We believe that what we are doing now can bring a lot of musical diversity that could feel as though it’s much like one of those multiple-act shows. The sound the band Rockland Road makes with its 6 part harmony is very unique. Yet the sound each of the individuals in the band make is completely different. If you think of groups like The Eagles or Fleetwood Mac, they had very strong individual artists in their band, that went on to have successful solo careers themselves.

So if you see one of those acts perform today, they tend to do the artists’ solo hits in their shows, right along with the bands’ hits. Jamie and I provide financial and musical support, plus we wear many other hats that go along with touring. We hope to delegate some of those chores to others down the road and mostly participate in the live performances. But we even expect a time where we will limit our time onstage too.

Rockland Road Is great. I loved seeing Paul on The Marty Stewart show and loved hearing him sing as well as Jamie. Their children are great singer also and glad they are getting to sing on different places. I still pray they will come to Raleigh Nc so I can go hear then in person. I guess you can say I am a big fan of theirs as well as a big fan of the OakRidge Boys and loved hearing about the family and seeing them on tv.
