Today we’d like to introduce you to Phyllis Bradley.
Hi Phyllis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a mother of 3 and a grandmother of 6. I had a wonderful 30 year career in education. I retired in 2016 and stay active in Rotary, the GFWC Dickson Woman’s Club, and my parish church. During my years in education, I taught English and after I had my children I began a career in teaching G.E.D. to adults. This was a very rewarding career and one that brought me more satisfaction than anything I had ever done.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2016, but I have not let the disease define me as to ways I could still better my community.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I began my educational career as a sixth grade English teacher. After having my children, I decided to teach adult education at night so I could be home with my children during the day. Teaching adults to read and/or get their G.E.D. was so rewarding I decided I wouldn’t go back to teaching English. I continued with the adult education program until I retired in 2016. During my career I was awarded: Sequoyah Literacy Award in 2002 and the GED Testing Center Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. I have served in the following leadership roles: Leadership Dickson County, United Way Board of Directors, Head Start Board of Directors, American Heart Association board, High Noon Rotary President, GFWC Treasurer, American Cancer Society Board and Auction Chair, TAACE, and Education Edge Steering Committee.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I was the youngest of four girls and the first college graduate in my family. My favorite childhood memory was getting to ride in the Gulf Oil truck that my daddy drove.
