Meet Renly Washer of Greater Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renly Washer.

Hi Renly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m one of those creative types who are always inside their head and looking for new inspiration. I was always drawing, making stories, and writing songs from a young age. By college age, I started thinking about my options for a career, and because of my love of art and tech-savvy skills, I decided that graphic design was my best-suited career path. I started my learning journey at a local Nashville tech school and received my Associate in Graphic Design; I returned to college several years later and obtained a Bachelor’s degree at MTSU. My best friend, who does wedding and headshot photography, got me into photography. Over the last 7 years, I have been doing photography as a hobby and professionally for events, headshots and products, and my skills in graphic design have flourished. In the last year, I have decided to step out of my comfort zone and have been selling my digital art and photography at local vendor markets and online on different eCommerce platforms. Putting my work out there and seeing public interest has boosted my confidence as an artist and designer and encouraged me to keep creating.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Design and art is such saturated career and hobby path that I have had to deal with a lot of competition, both in college and out in the world. Passing into the upper levels of graphic design at a university is very competitive, and I, unfortunately, did not cut while attending MTSU. This brought on a lot of self-doubts and made me question what path I should be choosing to follow for a career. I kept creating, though, and I put my services out there for clients, and I have continued on the path of art and design. Over the last 7 years since I graduated from MTSU with a BA in Liberal Studies, I have grown in my design skills. I have been successfully offering my services in design, photography, and social media management to many clients and customers in the Nashville area.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a digital artist and photographer. My art consists of many subjects such as; plant art, animal art, funny cat posters, food pop art, vector portraits, and landscapes. My photography work is mostly from my international travels of iconic places and unique landscapes, local sites from my hometown, abandoned places, and delicious platted foods. I am most proud of my travel photography and some of the amazing shots I have captured on my journey to explore the world. I am always searching for new avenues of inspiration and new ways to create.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role you feel it’s played for you?
I would say that luck might have had some part in my journey to becoming a designer, but mostly I think it was perseverance and drive. I kept feeling knocked down, but I would give myself some time to build my courage and confidence before trying again. I think luck is only a factor when you put yourself out there, and after that, would it be considered luck?
