Today we’d like to introduce you to Rico Johnson.
Hi Rico, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Memphis, TN. I am a South Memphis native and graduated from Southside High School in 2001, I took the not-so-common route of participating in a gap year to save money for college. By August of 2003, I had earned and saved enough money to start the next chapter of my life, so I decided to come to Nashville to attend Tennessee State University. Being a businessman is something I had my sights on early, so I knew my major would be in some arena of business. I graduated from Tennessee State University in 2008, with a Bachelor’s degree in Real Estate and Urban Development and a double major in Economics and Finance. While attending TSU, I met my lovely wife and had three children, needless to say, I am very thankful for TSU! I had to take a few corporate jobs to provide financial stability for my family so I was not able to pursue my passion of Real Estate immediately after I graduated, but I always knew my road to success would lead me there. On New Year’s Eve of 2018, my wife asked me what my New Year’s Resolution would be and I told her it wasn’t a resolution but conquering a goal and my goal was too finally get my Real Estate License. I signed up for classes the very next day, which was a great way to start my new year. By May of 2019, I had received my Real Estate license and was ready to start my career journey, the moment I had been waiting on since 2003! I started my real estate career in May of 2019, with Exit United Realty. I have always had a passion for every aspect of real estate, but I knew becoming a realtor ® was definitely my lane in the business. There’s just this great feeling of fulfillment knowing that you’ve helped a family move into their first home or assisted someone in purchasing their dream home.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenges have been starting a brand-new career in the beginning of a worldwide pandemic. For the first year as a realtor, you’re just getting your foot in the door and you have to do a lot of networking, open houses, and face-to-face meetings. I was able to do extremely well in the first stages because of it. Then the tornado and Covid-19 all hit within the same month in March of 2020, and it caused a lot of extreme obstacles and I had to learn how to pivot and create new and innovative ways to stay successful as a realtor during a global pandemic. It was challenging trying to create new ways to seek clients and hold virtual home tours. It was also challenging trying to keep my clients and future clients reassured that the market was still a great market to purchase a home in, even during these new never seen before times. I reassured them that In lieu of these difficult times, houses are still selling quickly on the market and buyers are still able to purchase with the help of historically low mortgage rates and this is absolutely a great time to buy or sell a home.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a licensed Realtor in Tennessee servicing all of Middle Tennessee areas. I provide real estate services of all facets, but I love working with first-time homebuyers and home sellers. I conduct annual workshop seminars to educated first-time homeowners in the process. My workshop is called Steps to Homeownership and it is a virtual zoom workshop where myself and 4 other guest speakers discuss the key 5 steps needed to have before you are able to become a homeowner. You can follow my Instagram page to check for updates on when the next workshop will be held. I have also published 2 books titled “The Complete Guide to Buying a Home” and “Expired? A Guide For Selling Homes Others Couldn’t Sell”. What sets me apart from others would be is that I am very involved in the community and as a family man I offer a more expertise because I am not just trying to sell you a house, I want to find you a home and I take that seriously so I won’t rush you into making an offer that you really don’t want to accept I will honor your wishes and keep persevering for you until I find the home you really love. I take pride In knowing you are completely satisfied with your deal because my solid customer service and experience goes beyond the transaction. I am most proud of my referrals because they are the highest form of a compliment for me, which is why I want to be able to continue maintaining a relationship with my clients after they have purchased their home so that I know they will happily refer me to anyone seeking real estate assistance. One of my motto’s is “I offer a customer experience that goes beyond a transaction.”
What’s next?
I would like to stay consistent in my sales and have continued growth within myself and my client base. I would also like to continue educating people who are unaware in how the home buying process works and to keep assisting those with common real estate needs. I would also like to start mentoring new and potential upcoming realtors as they begin their career journey. Within the next 5-10 years I would like to own my own brokerage firm and I am currently creating a blueprint and laying down the groundwork needed to make that dream happen.
