Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberta Fisher.
Roberta, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Once I graduated with my Bachelors in Legal Studies, I realized that law school truly wasn’t my interest. I declined a position at a sports law firm in South Florida and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee.
With real experiences and realizing that I had to transition into life after sports, I decided to dive into something that I knew would be the most rewarding to my heart. At the tender age of 24, I opened my own child care center. I was challenged, doubted, and did not receive the initial support I had hoped for, but I was resilient and I was aware of what I would need to do in order to reach where I was trying to be.
I so badly wanted to be the individual I needed growing up, to young children and I’m doing exactly that TODAY! I’ve currently been in business going on seven years, and my next goal is to help young adults start their own child care journey as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A lot of parents tour different child care facilities expecting the owner/director to be a middle-aged woman. When parents saw that I was on the younger side, they were shocked and a little hesitant to enroll.
Additionally, another early struggle was filling the center up, because back then I wasn’t hip to the importance of marketing. Outside of that, I was new in the area and unfamiliar with the demographics.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kidding Around Child Care Center?
Kidding Around Child Care Center was created not only to meet the child care needs in Middle Tennessee but also to enrich and uplift children. We pride ourselves on diversity, and we offer programs geared to meet the needs of children from ages 1 through 5!
Children of all ages and backgrounds are given the freedom to partake in a wide range of experiences that will allow them to grow daily! It is our notion that these experiences are provided in a contributory and enriching environment, be child friendly, be actively involved in the approach, and encourage a child’s freedom of choice as much as possible.
We provide a cozy “home away from home” feel with eye-catching paintings and a fun outdoor playground. With the coziness of “home away from home”, comes “less like friends, more like family” a saying we strongly believe, strengthens the bonds between children, parents, and staff.
We firmly believe that all kids need is someone who believes in them, and that is what we will do. The children are our future, and we believe in laying the groundwork for our future lawyers, athletes, and CEOs who will model the high confidence and extraordinary intelligence needed for prosperity in life.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I strongly believe in networking with other like-minded people in your field. It’s necessary to find a group of people you can ask particular questions to or bounce ideas off of. What has worked well for me in securing a mentor in my field that I can contact whenever I need advice or a second opinion.
