Meet Roz of The Curves

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Roz of The Curves.

Roz The Curves (band name)

Hello, Roz it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
We all have our individual stories about how and why we ended up in Nashville playing music – personally, I’m from Ottawa, ON, Canada, and all I’ve ever wanted to do with my life is make music, but everyone told me I should be a doctor and I listened to them – for a bit. After I graduated university I gave my degree to my parents, packed everything I needed to play gigs in my little Chevy Cruze and drove around the US playing shows – living in Walmart parking lots and taking FULL advantage of trial passes at gyms so I could shower haha.

That’s the first time I came to town alone. I fell in love with it and knew that I wanted to make it more long-term. I started playing on Broadway and eventually I was introduced to our producer who had the idea of putting together a female fronted TRUE band where we all played instruments and did our thing just the 4 of us. Our drummer, Wes, was from a previous band that our producer had worked on, and he was getting off the road, so he came to play with us. From there, we found our guitar player, Ben. He and I had both filled in as strangers on a Broadway gig and I remembered that I loved playing with him, so I asked him to join, and he was in! And finally, the newest member of the band is our bass player, Dean.

He was our main fill in guy for our cover gigs and we tried SO hard to get him to join and at the end of 2023 he finally took the leap! Our band is truly the perfect blend of all of our personalities and musical backgrounds, and that’s what makes our music and our sound truly ours. We continue to play Broadway gigs every weekend – getting our 10,000 hours in – but the goal is to get on the road playing our own music that we’ve been putting out for the past two years or so.

It’s been awesome seeing people really connect with our music and we are all so pumped for the songs we have lined up for this coming year.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
HA! It has been anything and everything but smooth. We started this project right before COVID shut everything down, so getting everyone together was hard in itself. Our entire plan to launch the band was essentially thrown in the trash, and we had to put together a whole new game plan on the fly. We weren’t allowed to be in an enclosed space together, we had no places to play gigs, offices were all closed, and TikTok took over.

It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride trying to navigate this new world where social media is king. We also had a few members change over time, which is always a stressful situation, but everything really does happen for a reason. We have a new energy and vibe now that feels so right, and we are ready to take on all the new challenges that we know will come our way together.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
I’m the lead singer of The Curves – a high-energy, in-your-face pop-country band. We are known for our very energetic and engaging live shows. Our goal on stage is to have so much fun and dance like nobody is watching so that everyone in the crowd feels completely safe to let loose, dance, and sing along with us without holding back. We aren’t necessarily trying to chase what’s popular in country right now – we have a vibe and sound that is US and that’s what we do no matter what and that’s what makes us unique. Hopefully everyone leaves our shows saying, “Man that was a great time”.

I can’t speak for the boys here, but for me personally. I’m most proud of myself for not giving up. This town is hard, and it can truly beat you up and there are definitely days where I question what the hell I’m doing with my life. But I keep on chugging along, and I remind myself that I get to make music every single day with a group of extremely talented guys who I love, and that picks my spirits up and gives me the boost I need to get into the writing room or the studio or on the stage the next day and keep on chasing the dream.

It’s a tough town, but it’s a beautiful and motivating town as well, and I’m pretty freaking lucky I get to call it home and make music for a living.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
That’s a very hard question! The first thing that came to mind isn’t anything extravagant, but it’s something that I remember on a regular basis. My family camped every summer because my parents were teachers, and we had the summers off. They’d pack all 4 of us kids in the minivan with all our camping gear, and we would drive across the country exploring.

Obviously, back then, there was no streaming music, so we had a regular rotation of CDs that played on the drive, and I think the ones that got played the most were Shania Twain’s albums “The Woman in Me” and “Come on Over.” I know those albums so well that if I hear the songs in a different order than what they are in I feel completely thrown off like something is extremely wrong. We would sing through those albums at the top of our lungs, over and over and over – so carefree. Singing because it was fun – not worried about missing a note or doing anything “properly.” Singing for the love of it.

And every time I hear those albums now, I think of those days, and I always, no matter what – even if it drives my husband crazy, will sing each song at the top of my lungs, and it reminds me to sing because I love it – not because it’s now my job. It’s moments like that that made me fall in love with music, and I always smile and think back to those days.
