Meet Russ Burroughs of Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Russ Burroughs

Hi Russ, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began on the baseball field, where I pursued my dream of becoming a professional player. I spent years honing my craft, learning the value of discipline, resilience, and teamwork. After my playing days ended, I found a new passion in coaching, which led me to become the head coach of the Wilmington Sharks. There, I’ve had the privilege of leading young athletes, building championship-caliber teams, and instilling life lessons that go far beyond the game.

In addition to coaching, I’ve dedicated over 17 years to being the head baseball instructor at the Nashville Baseball Academy. It’s been incredibly rewarding to help players of all levels improve their skills and achieve their goals. Along the way, I realized that my impact could extend beyond the field.

That realization inspired me to become a certified Life Coach, focusing on guiding both current and former athletes. I help them navigate the unique challenges of their journeys—whether it’s achieving peak performance, managing transitions, or finding purpose beyond sports.

Every step of my path, from athlete to coach to mentor, has been about growth and giving back. My goal is to help others become the best versions of themselves, both on and off the field. It’s been an incredible ride, and I’m excited for what’s still ahead.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s no such thing as a completely smooth road in life, and honestly, I believe the bumps along the way are what make it all worthwhile. We don’t grow when everything is going perfectly—we grow when we face challenges and adversity. Life is less about what happens to us and more about how we respond to those moments.

For me, the journey has had its share of struggles. Being released from teams was one of the hardest pills to swallow as a player. Losing in championship games taught me about perseverance and how to lead with integrity, even in defeat. And then there were personal struggles—like closing chapters with people I was once close to—which tested my resilience and my ability to adapt to change.

But the biggest turning point came in 2020. That year, I faced some of my deepest challenges and decided to embark on a personal journey inward. It was a time for healing, self-reflection, and transformation. I committed to becoming the best version of myself—not just for my own sake, but so I could better serve others. That journey wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth it.

The struggles I’ve faced have shaped me into who I am today. They’ve taught me strength, humility, and the importance of staying grounded no matter what life throws my way. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing because those challenges made me better.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I wear many hats in my work, but at the core, I’m all about helping athletes grow both on and off the field. As the head coach of the Wilmington Sharks, I focus on building a culture of excellence, teamwork, and resilience. As the head baseball instructor at Nashville Baseball Academy, I specialize in developing players’ skills and preparing them to compete at the highest level. And as a certified Life Coach, I guide current and former athletes through the transitions and challenges of life, helping them discover their full potential beyond sports.

What I’m most proud of, though, has nothing to do with wins, stats, or trophies. It’s when my athletes finish their time with me, and we still stay in touch. Getting wedding invitations or hearing about their life successes means the world to me. It’s proof that I’ve made a lasting impact on their lives beyond the game. That’s my greatest achievement—knowing I’ve been a mentor and a positive influence in their personal growth.

What sets me apart is my holistic approach. I don’t just focus on the game—I focus on the person. My journey as a former professional player, coach, and life coach gives me a unique perspective to connect with athletes on multiple levels. It’s not just about helping them succeed in baseball; it’s about preparing them for life. That’s where the real victories happen.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that often surprises people about me is that I’m plant-based and have been for a while now. It’s a lifestyle choice that’s helped me prioritize my health and well-being, both physically and mentally. Most people don’t expect that from someone with a background in baseball and coaching, but it’s a big part of how I stay at my best.

Another thing that catches people off guard is that I play the piano. It’s a creative outlet that I’ve always enjoyed, and it gives me a way to relax and express myself outside of the world of sports and coaching. It’s a reminder that growth and fulfillment come from all areas of life—not just the ones people might associate you with.
