Meet Samuel Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Wilson.

Samuel Wilson

Hi Samuel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2019, while serving as a Lieutenant/Paramedic in the fire department, I came to the stark realization that the legal cannabis industry was poised to overwhelmingly exclude black owners. Witnessing the enduring impact of the cannabis prohibition on black communities fueled my conviction.

The blatant strategy to perpetuate this exclusion post-legalization fueled my determination, leading to the inception of “Support Your Local Weed Man.” What began as a mere t-shirt company evolved into a powerful movement. Forming strategic partnerships along the way, we now proudly co-own two THC Cafes—one in Chicago and another in the southwestern suburbs.

Our mission extends to establishing the first black-owned THC cafe in Chicago, honoring those most adversely affected by the cannabis prohibition.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At this very moment, corporate cannabis is wielding its financial might and political sway to suppress the hemp industry, a key avenue for genuine social equity.

In Illinois, “Support Your Local Weed Man” is at the forefront of this battle, actively taking the fight to the capital to defend the interests of the community.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For over five decades, the cannabis prohibition served as a weapon, systematically dismantling black communities. Despite the wave of legalization and societal embrace, these individuals find themselves with a minuscule presence in the legal cannabis industry, particularly in terms of ownership.

The reality is that genuine social equity remains elusive in the cannabis sector. Our brand, “Support Your Local Weed Man,” aspires to not only stand as a symbol of optimism but also forge a tangible path towards increased black ownership within this burgeoning industry.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Our key success factor?

It’s all about that gritty resilience—fueled by street-smart determination, pushing through systemic hurdles, challenging the status quo, and uplifting communities hit hard by the shadows of cannabis prohibition.
