Meet Scott Reall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Reall.

Hi Scott, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a Senior Wellness Director at the Green Hills Family YMCA in Nashville Tennessee in 1988. I knew that I could help people reach their fitness goals but often found that underlying issues of the heart and spirit needed to be addressed before lasting transformation could really take place. I knew that a healing process and an opportunity to be truly known in a trusted community was vital to the overall process, so I began offering 12-Steps groups in the basement of the YMCA. With the incredible success of the 12-Steps groups, I saw a need for this type of spiritual development to be a permanent part of YMCA offerings and in the year 2000 Restore Ministries of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee was formed.

In 2005, renowned Christian publisher Thomas Nelson approached me about writing a series of books. A year later, Journey to Freedom was published as the first of five books in the Journey Series. This book became the cornerstone for Restore Ministries’ small groups. In 2007, the other four books – Journey to a Life of Significance, Journey to Living with Courage, Journey to Healthy Living, and Journey to a New Beginning after a Loss – were published.

With the growing national and international popularity of the Journey Series and the small group process that accompanies it, Restore Ministries branched out in 2015 to form its own nonprofit, focusing on equipping partners to launch this life-changing curriculum for themselves. Thus, ‘RESTORE SMALL GROUPS’ was formed! Journey to Freedom has been translated into Russian, Spanish, French, German, Ukrainian, and Swahili. It has also been adapted for youth, inmates at various jails and prisons, as well as breast cancer survivors. In nearly 20 years of ministry, restore has perfected the sacred, safe space that peer-to-peer small groups provide for participants to find hope and healing!

As Restore continues to see what we have developed with the small group process and the growing struggles around loneliness, addiction, uncertainty, depression, and chronic illness across the world, we continue to adapt and serve the need by offering Journey to Freedom and other groups. Restore has made the connection that the key to lasting change is finding the path of transformation. This path is found in the healing community. The key is staying on the path for encouragement, accountability, and hope- in all seasons.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Much like any good work in the world, I have seen many struggles and celebrated tons of victories along the way in this nonprofit work. Without the support of faithful participants, donors, friends, colleagues, and family-I am not sure where Restore would be. God has shown up to carry Restore each step of the way and I could tell you hundreds of stories about struggles that we have overcome as a ministry, give you all the reasons we shouldn’t have survived, but we are still here doing this great work in Nashville and around the world.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have always felt led to help people… animals… just all of God’s creation. I’ve always felt drawn to loving and helping and healing wounded and broken things. I love animals so I have always found myself rescuing dogs, cats, squirrels, possums, chipmunks, birds, turtles, and frogs. You name it- I would bring it home to my poor mother and we would try to help mend it. God has mended my life from all of my brokenness so I guess that’s why I’m drawn to this type of work because of how much I needed it for myself as well.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would be playing sports. I always played football, basketball, baseball, golf, and tennis. I just love playing sports and I played all the way through college. A close second memory was actually feeling God watch over my life. I always felt a closeness as I walked to church by myself. When I was little I just had an innate feeling that I was supposed to do something with God in my life.
