Today we’d like to introduce you to Shay Wright.
Hi Shay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We’re decay.
My name is Shay, the vocalist and leader of decay. We are an experimental metal band based out of Nashville, TN. Our origins are actually already explained in another interview from Voyager, but a lot has changed since then. We worked hard to finish our first album, “Guilt Trip,” which is out now on all streaming platforms. It was such an honor to be able to work with such amazing people on this album like Cole Miller, Nick Janson, and Charlie Gregorino. Moving forward with the band, we’ve added a full new lineup of people involved. decay. is planning on a lot of new, big ideas for the future. I’m really excited to show the world the new decay. We are moving towards a new single release, “Sick Fuck,” with the help of Kieran Smith on drums, Kevin Becker on guitar, and Will Meckley on bass. The new song is 7 minutes long and that’s only because I had so much to say in it. It’s about realizing that you can’t fix what has been broken sometimes and you have to accept that and all of the things you’ve done. I’m really stoked for this new single, I think it really shows what direction we’re taking musically. Hopefully it will be out in late October of this year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it’s been quite difficult for me to find people who want exactly what I want. I want to take this as far as I can and my drive can often come off as pushy and stressful to others I’ve learned. Last year, I wasn’t living up to my own standards or others’ standards and I will never make that mistake again. At the end of the day, I know I just have to be upfront and realistic about goals and aspirations to make sure everyone is on the same page. I also dealt with a great deal of depression during the recording process of our album, which ended up affecting a lot of people in my life, including my bandmates. You can’t do anything productive when you’re trying to pick yourself up off the floor and you can’t expect others to do what you think they should do if that makes any sense. My back and forth tendencies have been difficult to manage for me to an extent that it affects my daily life and the bands life. I will always feel sad for the past and my mistakes, but hey! It’s only up from here.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Besides decay., I work at The Cobra, a venue and bar in Nashville where I book and promote shows through the venue. On top of that, I run my own DIY booking company called Crime Scene Booking where I book local acts for free. I do this simply because I love to create new connections and be a part of my musical community. I’m also finishing up my Songwriting degree at Belmont University this winter, which I’m beyond grateful for. I want to build a space for smaller artists to be able to show the world what they’ve got and I hope that through what I’m currently doing I can create that for them and myself. Smaller artists are incredibly overlooked, and I find it stupid as hell, honestly. Smaller artists are the next generation of stars and people need to be looking at it that way.
