Today we’d like to introduce you to Skip Black.
Hi Skip, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started playing guitar at the age of ten. I was very curious about how songs were made more so than anything else so at about 14 I dove into songwriting. I started a band in my early 20’s and we played shows with Gary Allan, Kenny Chesney, Lonestar and many other major acts and that got me excited about Nashville and taking it all up a level. I started making trips to Nashville in 2003 and signed my first pub deal in 2005 before I moved to town. I had a great mentor Kye Fleming who took me under her wing and introduced me to Stephanie Cox who ran Larga Vista at the time. Steph and Kye signed me to a new deal when I moved to Nashville in 2007. I needed getting my first radio single around 2010 with Tyler Farrs Hello Goodbye then soon after Eden’s Edge took my song Amen to top 20. I kept getting cuts pretty regular and ventured into the Canadian market that’s been really great for me. I wrote a song that became a line dance standard for a Canadian act Aaron Goodvin called Lonely Drum and that song has grown legs and went worldwide due to the line dance. We ended up winning songwriter of the year for Lonely Drum at the CCMA’s in 2018. That’s about time I got really into production and in 2019 I produced a record on artist Kalie Shorr that got a lot of. Attention. We made the New York Times best albums of 2019 as well as many other publications. I kept producing since then and worked with different genres such as 4 songs recently on blues rock guitarists Jared James Nichols. I just finished making Scotty Hastings first record and TJ Liles of the Georgia Thunderbolts first solo record.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s been many struggles navigating the business side of things. You learn fast thru error after a few bad deals then you understand the flow of money in the industry and you wise up to knowing how to protect yourself.
