Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Horn.
Hi Stacey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a Social Worker for 35 years and have worked closely with the Recovery community throughout. During and after the Pandemic, I had a position assessing individuals in crisis in hospital ER’s and ICU’s, and repeatedly met mature women in a substance abuse crisis who had no sober living environments to return to.
As a therapist, I primarily work with mature, and aging adults and have become very attuned to their issues. I met and worked with some individuals in Seattle, who had set up very successful sober living programs, I was surprised that I was unable to find other programs nationally- who focus on individuals in this age group and I was inspired to serve women aged 50 and over in this way. My husband has been a general contractor for 30+ years and we knew that between us, we could provide a comfortable, safe environment for women to find recovery in the ways that work best for them.
We set up the Non profit organization in September 2023, opened our first home in June 2024, and our second home in June 2025.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We worked locally with the TN Alliance of Recovery Residences -TN-ARR, to become a Certified home-providing safe and supportive peer environments, and we comply with National Standards for Recovery residences. This was a surprisingly smooth road, however the learning curve was steep! TN- ARR has a total of 301 recovery residences with 2,258 recovery beds in 34 cities/towns in Tennessee.- but I actually think this number has grown recently!
A slight struggle has been getting clear on the physical limitations incoming residents might have, to ensure that we can safely support them. Our first home has two stories, with one bedroom on the first floor. Our second home is a ranch style home, which is easier for a couple of our current residents who have more difficulty walking. We have had a couple of women with back, hip, or knee problems for whom stairs would be barriers to living. As the homes are peer- driven, and do not have staff supervision- all residents must be able to take any medications and perform all activities of daily living- independently.
A struggle has been transportation- as we’re in North Madison on the border of Goodlettsville, we are several blocks from the bus lines. About half of our women are retired, or have Disabilities and do not currently work, and some of the residents do not have cars, which make it more difficult for women who are job seeking!
Finances to pay program fees have also been a barrier for some women, particularly when family relationships have been damaged and they don’t have support. We are currently working with some treatment programs, who have grant funding which provides a scholarship to help with fees while they are in treatment.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a full time Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Spring Creek Mental Health services, a private practice in Goodlettsville and telehealth. I’ve done this for 35 years and don’t see myself retiring. I love working with tired health care professionals and mature adults who are in some kind of life transition- empty nests, approaching retirement, professional burnout, or attempting to adjust to the aging (maturing) process.
I operate a Non Profit organization- Next Chapter Homes. What sets us apart is that we operates two women’s recovery homes – for women aged 50 and over. At the rate America is aging, I’m surprised that no one else is focusing on meeting these needs! It’s absolutely amazing to see these women develop the habits that can sustain them in recovery and repair relationships with family members.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
A couple of fun facts about me= 1) I’m 63 years old and I have an 18 year old who is graduating from Davidson Academy in June and preparing for college adventures! I completely “get” the challenges of maturing, and addressing our cultural expectations women are facing with careers, parenting and relationships and looking at “What’s Next?”
2) I specialize in InnerKinetics™ which uses temperament analysis to help individuals recognize their innate design, leverage strengths, and improve relationships, and overall fulfillment by understanding their unique “blueprint” for success.
3) I’ve been a Certified Hypnotist for 17 years, and I help people rapidly make changes in their lives- from smoking cessation and changing old patterns of reaction and behavior- to live life with more peace,. I’ve also worked extensively with fertility, pregnancy and birth.
