Today we’d like to introduce you to Starlotte Satine.
Hi Starlotte, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for vintage aesthetic and showgirls has been prevalent since I was very young. I grew up in Nevada where my mom was a keno runner in the casinos which resulted in me spending a lot of time watching cocktail waitresses in their uniforms work the floor( to me they were showgirls), and my grandfather was heavily into watching old westerns where I constantly was inspired by the saloon girls on tv. I also spent a ton of time rummaging through old things from our families past generations at my great grandma’s houses over the summers. This combo left me constantly chasing sparkle and retro vibes endlessly over the years. However, growing up in a small American western town left me with little opportunity for a show biz artsy lifestyle.
Fast forward to my early teen years where my family by chance made the call to move Canada for work and I eventually was enrolled into an arts school where I was able to follow my passion for dance and visual art that I would have never been able to pursue other wise in my home town.
That inevitably led me to taking animation in college, and a series of events led me from that to pinup modelling, and then to film work. Discovering burlesque was what really changed my entire world.
The vintage selling business was an out of reach dream for me in my early 20s but I always dreamt about owning my own shop and eventually that dream became a reality in 2016.
Some thing just felt meant to be and my vintage lifestyle has felt very kismet and magical.
I count my lucky stars every day that I get to live out my dream jobs on the regular.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a small business owner/ independent touring artist and performer no matter what side of the industry you’re will always have it’s struggles. It would be imposible for me to delve into every one of them on paper here.
However, despite the struggles, I feel like somehow I’ve gotten lucky on some fronts with an amazing support system of people around me who have believed in my vision and helped keep the ball rolling all these years. It truly takes a village sometimes to support making magical experiences for people on the regular. If I could give any piece of advice it would be to curate a circle of good support around you and look up for the people who have paved the way before you.
As a young entrepreneur and dream chaser you have to be constantly willing to pivot at any given moment. I feel like I’ve spent my entire life pivoting to be able to continue making art. Having hope that it will work out no matter what also helps.
I’ve been asked how I am able to continue pursuing art as a career and the short answer has always been I simply cannot imagine not being a full time creator. I was never cut out to work an every day 9-5 office job. I tried that in my late teens early 20s and it felt like torture not doing something every day that brought me joy. I’ve always been this way. Simply put, life in general is challenging sometimes and sometimes you don’t get to choose your hardships, but being able to adapt to them is some of the best life skills one can develop!
I truly think being an artist has helped me learn to cope with even the unrelated big life challenges thrown my way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It’s very hard to pinpoint exactly what I “specialize” in because I feel like a jack of all trades within’ the arts.
However, overall I’m a creator, artist, business owner, a touring dancer, and a vintage lifestyle enthusiast.
By day I am putting clothes on, and by night I’m taking them off technically.
Both somehow are equally inspiring in their own ways in the form of empowerment.
I consider myself in the vintage world a “temporary treasure keeper of people’s things” and when I’m not doing that im touring the world Gogo dancing with live bands or doing and doing burlesque.
On the side, I’m a costume designer for film and theatre with the capability of doing hair and makeup, and in between that an event planner, producer, PR rep, Visual artist, and more….
I know it’s a lot. Even I’m tired just thinking about it! I will say this, it’s never boring!
I’m so passionate and proud of how versatile I’ve become. It’s truly a real life super power being able to meld into different facets of what I do and be a chameleon.
As live as I’m helping inspire others to live their best lives while I’m living mine I’m happy.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I can think of many big risks I’ve taken over the course of 15 years but the top 3 that’s really stuck out to me was:
-Quitting my 9-5 retail job to work in film with little security waiting for me on the other end while exiting an abusive relationship.
-Applying for opening my own vintage brick and mortar clothing shop in Sudbury ON on a big scale with zero business experience under my belt at the age of 27.
-Then closing that shop and risking it all the moment Covid hit to jump ship and move to Toronto to be a full time performer. Which has to this day been the best yet hardest choice I’ve ever made.
I do feel like I consider myself a risk taker and have always lived by the moto of life is too short to not live it authentically doing things you love. I think we spend a lot of time as humans not fighting to pursue things that inspire us and fulfill us out of fear. I truly think if you’re not taking risks you’ll never grow.
I never want to be on my death bed with regrets that I didn’t follow my dreams. I see it every day in my career where people regret not doing more of what they dreamt about in their youth. So many people keep themselves stuck out of fear of failing or judgement from others.
For me, the fear of regretting not trying is way greater to me than taking risks to get there. At least I can say I lived and will have the coolest stories to tell later.
