Meet Trenton Tanner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trenton Tanner.

Hi Trenton, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my musical journey in the small town of Cassville Missouri around 5 years ago. I actually started singing basically because of a bet. I had friends tell me I was a great singer but never looked into it. Well that being said, I was in a very rough spot in life not knowing where I was going, or what I wanted to do, and just felt as though I was in a black hole battling through alcohol addiction and struggling with depression and anxiety.

I gave up going to college to play football out of high school and a few years later I had lost the fire in me. I lost who I was. So I was just looking for something I just didn’t know what it was. But My friend bet me to sing one song and post it on Facebook and so I did and it blew up. It had 10 thousand views or so.

So I sang a few more and they were getting 50 to 100 thousand views. And so I had a few people reach out to me asking if I wrote songs or played instruments and at the time I did not. But I decided maybe I would try it and just see how it went. Writing to me came naturally and it just felt so free to put a pen on paper.

So I began writing and found a few friends who played guitar and we began just small “jam sessions”. Well, about 4 years ago, I decided that I wanted to take being a singer/songwriter to the next level and pick up a guitar. Which was the best decision I’ve ever made. I started creating music to put with the words I needed to say. To me, it didn’t matter who or what was in front of me, I just knew in my heart I wanted to say what was weighing on me. From then, I started playing gigs a year later and haven’t stopped.

I have been fortunate in my few years of playing, to be able to play on Broadway in Nashville, I’ve opened for artists such as Ryan Upchurch, The Black Moods, Whisky Outlaws, Point South, and more. I’ve recorded a few songs in Nashville and have been able to meet great producers and great people along the way. Three years ago, I recorded my first album with a few friends, which in my opinion a guy from a small town of about 3 thousand people it’s had great success. Since then, I’ve recorded multiple singles such as “Cowboy”, “Maybe By Now”, and “Just You And I”.

I just recently recorded a song called “Roses” in Nashville which I’m very excited about releasing to the music platforms. I write songs from my heart, and I definitely wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to songwriting. But I believe that’s what has set me apart from a lot of songwriters out in this world. As for singing, I’ve been told by friends, or fans or followers, not only do people hear my stories, but they can feel my pain or my happiness which is something you don’t always get from singers.

For someone in my shoes who has been working multiple maintenance jobs in factories throughout my muscle journey; which in fact I still do work in maintenance, to have the success I’ve had is incredible and unbelievable. The amount of support from friends and family and most of all my 10-year-old son, Garron, also is just simply amazing. My son and my heart are what keep the drive for music inside me alive.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t believe it’s really been a smooth road.

I’ve had my struggles such as auditioning for the voice multiple times and making it to the second round, but then never any further. That was all very tough. Losing relationships and of course, job changes and life just throwing its obstacles at me has been a struggle. Many times I’ve thought about quitting or walking away not thinking I’d ever be good enough.

Just learning to play guitar in itself was a challenge that almost made me quit. I just never thought I’d figure it out.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a musician or a singer/songwriter if you will. I play acoustic guitar and sing cover songs or sing my originals as well.

What I’m about and what sets me apart from others I think comes hand in hand. I simply sing and write from my heart as if it’s all I have. The thing I am most proud of in my life is my son. He comes number 1 over anything.

He’s my inspiration to continue to do what I love on this career path that I’m taking. And I will forever be thankful for him for that.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think the biggest risk I’ve ever taken, was putting my voice out there for people to hear. I never sang in the choir. I never was involved in music until 24 years old. I took the risk of being completely humiliated by everyone or loved by some.

But I was willing to take that risk because at the time I felt I had nothing more to lose. I was at a complete rock bottom in life.
