Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Wyatt
Hi Will, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well I’ve always been an incessant music addict. I started playing drums at five and was gigging by the age of thirteen. Throughout high school, I was involved with every music program possible as well as playing clubs at night; and by the time I was eighteen, I was fortunately involved in a variety of music scenes throughout the Chicagoland area. That chapter of my career spanned for several busy years playing for numerous acts and artists. I had the pleasure of working with multiple Blues Hall of Fame artists and acts in genres such as: Country, Progressive-Metal, Soul, Rock, and Jazz. All of this has helped mold me into the musician that I am and my approach towards music as I’ve navigated the Nashville scene for almost two years now. In my short time here, I’ve been able to work on broadway, tour, and do some session work. I’m very happy to be doing what I love here while getting to express myself and offer a different musical palate for artists to utilize.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m lucky to say it has been a fairly smooth road. Even though I didn’t take the route of being a “well-behaved” drummer, I’ve worn my more eclectic influences on my sleeve and have found a good amount of success. On top of that, I’m happy to have developed an authentic voice over the years.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I simply do the best job I can to be a great musician. The vast amount of work I’ve done is as a musician for hire. Who ever I work with, regardless of genre or size of ensemble, I sit down and find the spot that feels best in terms of pocket and listen and comp various elements happening in the music. It’s great to sound good yourself, but it’s better to make others sound great. That’s how I’ve sustained my career. Musically, there are no rules. Well, to me atleast. So I use different instrumentation, inflections and nuances seemingly foreign to a specific style to complement those around me, add to the sonic range, and introduce new interesting flavors. I think that’s what sets me apart. Pushing for new ideas that don’t belong on paper; but can be the element that makes an individual’s music pop out. With that being said, the thing I’m most proud of is a record I did back in 2020 by a band I was with called the Head Honchos. It was my first record to make the top-ten charts in multiple European countries. It was my first record engineering and co-producing, ironically while wrapping up my bachelors in audio; and also featured me on drums, backing vocals, percussion, and harmonica.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
In terms of networking, if you’re not appearing, then you’re disappearing. Be out meeting new people, be active on social media and maintain and strengthen current relationships. The biggest help for me has been looking at networking as a part of my lifestyle and not my job. This is part of what being a musician or entertainer of any kind entails.
