Meet Wykisha Johnson of Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wykisha Johnson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a Michigan girl at the core came down to Nashville for college in 2006 thinking it was temporary, just a quick chapter. But God clearly had bigger plans, because this city ended up shaping my entire life. I built my foundation here, became a mother, and married the wonderful man I met in this very place. Nashville became home because it held my growth, my love, and the start of my family. I’m big on connection, self-care, concerts, good times, and creating moments that feel like joy and peace at the same time.

Nashville Black Girls Tribe was born from that same energy from craving sisterhood, community, and a space where Black women could show up fully as themselves. What started as a simple idea turned into a tribe, a safe space, a sisterhood full of love, laughs, healing, and accountability. I didn’t just create a group; I created a family that reflects who I am: community-driven, heart-centered, fun, and intentional. And every woman in this tribe is part of my purpose and my story.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The primary challenge I have faced has been developing a clear understanding of who I am as a woman. For many years, I focused on pleasing others instead of embracing my authentic self. Leading the group also presented challenges, particularly the pressure to satisfy everyone’s expectations. In both my personal and professional life, I have had to consistently commit to my own growth and self-improvement almost like an ongoing internal reconstruction. Ultimately, my goal is to become the best version of myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work in the healthcare industry where I specialize in supporting and caring for patients. One of my proudest accomplishments is completing college with honors; it allowed me to show my children, through my own actions, what hard work and determination truly look like. I am also widely recognized for creating safe, supportive spaces for women in environments where they can be themselves, ask honest questions, cry, laugh, heal, and be poured into.

Within my family, I’m simply “Mom,” or “Pooka,” and that grounding love keeps me centered.

What truly sets me apart, however, is my character. I refuse to elevate myself by stepping on anyone else’s back. My leadership is rooted in authenticity, integrity, and patience. I am comfortable waiting my turn because I wholeheartedly believe that what is meant for me will always find its way to me. This genuine, purpose-driven approach guides everything I do professionally, personally, and within my community.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking risks is essential for growth. While I don’t believe in risking everything recklessly, I do believe in pursuing meaningful risks those tied to what you genuinely want. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is sometimes necessary, because without taking that leap, you may never discover the opportunities waiting for you or what could have been possible.
