Today we’d like to introduce you to Wylie Withers.
Hi Wylie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up on a farm in Asheville, North Carolina. I came from a family of musicians and music lovers, raised on home-cookin’, hard work, and windows down beltings of our best Steve Perry. My dad made sure to have a house full of instruments, and my mom made sure we didn’t go broke in the process. I tried piano lessons when I was four, but I didn’t want to practice… Those songs didn’t sound right when I played what was written, and my mom told me I should play it how I wanted it to sound. I began writing songs in the second grade. Mom still has the crumpled-up lyric sheets she found in my pockets. We all eventually became band geeks- My brothers played the trombone and tuba, and I took up the saxophone after Santa brought me one. My band directors didn’t know what to do with me- they kept telling me to stop playing so loud, stop closing my eyes, and stop moving so much when I played. But momma told me music was supposed to be fun, and I absolutely loved it. Through band, I saw how melodies interact, and how feelings are captured just as much in sounds as they are in words. I played Saxophone all though middle school, high school, and college, and I still play it now. By high school, I had picked up bass, guitar, drums, banjo, ukulele, piano (how I wanted it to sound), and sang in acapella group and chorus. It was only natural that I went on to get my degree in marine biology from UNC- Wilmington. In college, I began building tracks and pouring countless hours into making beats in my little dorm room “studio”. After some world travel, some soul searching, and a little too much writing about algae, I ended up doing what my dad told me I was going to do from the get-go, give it all up and pursue a career as a record producer. I have been in Nashville now for just over two years. I graduated audio engineering and music business school, completed a studio internship, driven some uber, sliced some deli meat during a pandemic, took care of 44 horses on a ranch, made cider, wrote a ton of songs, and never gave up fighting for my dream of making records. I now run my own studio space, producing, mixing, and recording my songs and the songs of others. Living the dream baby, living the dream.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m hesitant to say it has been smooth or rough. I believe it has all been incredibly necessary, and all happened for the right reasons. I had a passion that I couldn’t escape from, but I didn’t see it being my career path until late into college. Then there’s working hard in jobs for survival, not because you love it. But all of those experiences lead you to new people. new places, and new feelings that you would never otherwise grow from. Sometimes the road ahead is foggy and full of detours, but I’m very grateful for every part of my journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I mix and record songs, but I am known for my ear for production and writing. I love to be in the studio with artists and bring out the best in them. I’m most proud of the relationships I have built and am continuing to build through this amazing industry. I couldn’t have come to where I am today without the my beautiful circle of friends and my family. What sets me apart is my ability to create an environment where artists can be truly themselves, and have fun. Creating music is magic. Creating music is fun.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love how Nashville always has something going on to do or explore. I love getting out and about and experiencing something new. Nashville has no shortages of new experiences. I don’t have too many complaints… The traffic kinda sucks
