Meet Yo Miestro of Chattanooga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yo Miestro

Hi Yo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My stage name is Yo Miestro (maestro). My brother gave me that name around 7th grade. I was raised around music and the night club scene since a child. My parents owned 3 night clubs, one we lived in for a few years, from 2000-2009. In 2008 my father was sentenced to 10 years in prison, which sparked my desire to create music. I used lyrics as a journal to vent. Through production and writing I veered into DJing, which came natural because I’ve always seen dope DJ in my parent’s club. I know this sounds odd when taking into account that I wasn’t even a teenager in these night clubs, but it was a very pivotal part of my development. 6 months after my father went to prison, I opened up from Young Jeezy, 2000+ in attendance, and right after opened up for young Dro. At 12 years old I Djed my first wedding. Whether I’m creating or playing music, I still look at it as way to connect with an audience. I love people and I love to display art. From 10 years old to 26 I’ve continued to find ways to connect with people through my love for music.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My dad going to prison when I was 10 caused a lot of issues. He originally was sentences to 25 years for drug trafficking and gun charges. Growing up we seen outlandish situations so often I thought that it was normal. I didn’t realize how crazy my childhood was until sharing some stories with friends and seeing their reaction. It’s a hard transition from having what seem like an endless source of money to losing your childhood home. Mentally I had a lot of soul searching to trying to figure what type of young man I wanted to be. These mental struggles pushed me to create Miestrology, a clothing brand design to promote mental health and positive mindset. My parents got a divorce my sophomore year, my mother was pregnant soon after, which lead to me moving out and being homeless for a few months in high school. Fortunately, sports and music kept me levelheaded. I use memories like these to fuel my desire with music, my mental health brand, and mentoring kids.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Those who know me by Yo Miestro more than likely know me as an artist or DJ. Some simply know me as an entrepreneur. I’m most proud of seeing kids I work with, who were in similar situations as I was, receive the right resources to be successful. I think I stand out from other because I don’t try to be others. I’m inspired by all people in one way or another but not the same. Usually not afraid to try something if I can make it part of the process for a bigger goal.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Truthfully, I don’t believe in luck. I believe if you work smart and tell the universe what you desire then it will be eventually. These things happen when they’re supposed to not always when we want them to. Having the mindset that ‘you’re going to be successful regardless’ goes a long way. That is how I’ve sustained myself without working for someone else for 5 years, about to be 6. Get into position with your work and wait for your time,
