We recently had the chance to connect with Mike “Beezy” Bright Sr. and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Mike “Beezy”, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
What am I chasing? That is a GREAT question. I am chasing the best version of myself, by constantly looking to improve on myself and craft. I provide entertainment and I always aim to make the next show, the best show. My dance crew has partnered with quite a few organizations and event planners, and we are really just competing with our previous performances, so we can’t even entertain the idea of stopping.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mike Bright and I am captain of a dance crew called Music City Soul. We are based in Nashville, TN, and we perform live street shows every weekend in the heart of Downtown Nashville. We also provide event entertainment, including weddings, birthdays, bar/bat mitzvahs, etc. Anywhere entertainment is needed, you can call on Music City Soul. We provide a brand of entertainment that I like to call “Interactive Entertainment”, where you become past of the show instead of just watching the show.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents definitely taught me the most about work. Hard work always pays off. Maybe not when you want it to, but it always does in the end. I’ve carried that belief into everything I do, even now in the Entertainment Industry. I make sure to give 1000% on everything. My name is attached to this, so I am definitely not going to slack off in any kind of way. And that work ethic has brought things to a point now, where it doesn’t feel like work at all. I mean, what better feeling is there than doing something you feel like you were born to do and immediately seeing the reward and the impact of it all?
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I think everyone reaches that point at some time in their lives. I think it’s just a part of growing up and part of the path of pursuing something you want to do. There’s going to be a wall at some point. It’s not all popcorn and cotton candy. If things were that easy, everyone would be living their best lives right? Even if that wall is just pure fear, which I believe is what stops a lot of people from truly doing whatever it is they have a passion for. Fear of the unknown, fear of taking that next step, fear of failing, fear of losing people along the way. Sometimes that thing you truly want to do is a departure from things and people you’ve known your entire life and that’s hard to let go of and ultimately things come to a crossroad. Do you continue past this point or give it all up? I say all that to say there was a time where my fear of losing people and relationships and my passion came to a head and it challenged me tremendously. Do I stick with what I know, or do I take that chance and in the process, possibly lose what AND who I know? That’s tough. I can confidently say, I feel like I made the right decision to take that chance.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
See that’s the beauty of providing this Interactive Entertainment. I am literally being myself while putting on a show. It doesn’t work otherwise. The foundation of what we do is based on organic human interaction and authenticity. It’s what makes our shows stand out. Nothing that we do is rehearsed, it’s all live and on the spot. It almost forces me to be myself, because people can tell you when you’re being fake, so there is not point in trying to be anyone other than who I naturally am. I think it’s probably what I love the most about performing the way we do. It allows us to naturally create moments and memories for people. We get to see the impact of our work immediately. It’s really a beautiful thing.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Quite simply, I did things MY WAY, by taking a less “traditional” path in this industry. From street dancing, to dancing on stage, to performing for event planners and entertainment companies, and forging partnerships. In the words of Frank Sinatra, I did it my way.
