We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mrs. Holly Brown. Check out our conversation below.
Holly, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I am most proud of building is a space where people (adults and children alike) can find a sense of community and feel comfortable creating at The Arts Alliance.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, My name is Holly Brown. I’m the Founder/Director of The Arts Alliance, an arts education organization located in Pleasant View where we offer private, group, and community lessons in all arts disciplines.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Growing up, I always wanted to be and knew I was going to be a dancer in some capacity. Everyone always asks children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” My answer was always, “A dancer. ” It wasn’t until later, as a teenager, I knew I wanted to have my own studio and teach. Of course, I was often met with the societal response of “But you’ll need a real job.” Our society doesn’t value the arts like it used to or like it should and this is where the pressure to find a “real job” stems from.
Later, in adulthood, I realized I wanted to provide a space for community and to cultivate a passion for all arts disciplines.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There has not really been a time when I have given up. There were certainly times when I stepped back or took a break from instruction. Managing and Directing an organization with so many moving parts, like ours, is a tall order, but I have always worked really hard to ensure that what we do and offer is well received by the community. We have so many people who support our mission and enjoy what we offer; that is very encouraging.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am committed to the belief that everyone should have access to the arts regardless of age, skill level, gender identity, financial status, etc. It is so important to cultivate creativity and imagination for all ages. The arts teach us so much more than just the action of painting or just the action of moving our bodies, and so on. The arts are essential for using both sides of the brain, coordination, keeping a sharp mental state, connecting with other humans, learning age appropriate socialization, following instructions, and so much more that arts disciplines are never given the credit for.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I am literally Tap dancing to work every day! Haha
There have been high-stress times that I have felt burnout, but for the most part, I get very excited about what I get to do every day for work.
