Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Metz
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Coming from a family of artists, it was hard to find an art form that was uniquely mine. I finally settled on using recycled materials as my media to make my art because it is challenging and it gives me the chance to give a new life to things that would otherwise be thrown out. I always equate creating my pieces to buying a secondhand jigsaw puzzle. You’re never quite sure if all the pieces are there but it makes a great picture if they are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If I’m being honest with myself, the challenge is the fun part. Since I only use preexisting material, sometimes my ideas can’t come to fruition the way I originally planned. Right now I’m in the process of making a piece that involves the word “Rodeo” and I’ve been through 30+ magazines looking for that one word to cut out with absolutely no luck. This guy may just have to be put on the back burner until fate brings me what I need. Until then, I’ll continue to harvest cool looking words and fonts for future projects.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist who works almost exclusively with recycled, donated, and broken materials. My work features harvested items such as words, pictures, and backgrounds found in magazines, newspapers, and junk mail. I also make jewelry made mostly out of broken vintage jewelry, donated beads from forgotten projects, and found items. Due to the nature of my materials, every piece is fully individual and unique. I try to not let anything go to waste.
I do also offer limited prints and stickers of my more popular designs made with that technique for those who missed out on the originals.
What were you like growing up?
I was the type of kid that would take things apart just to see if I could put them back together. It drove my mom crazy. I started working in theater productions around age 10 and would always end helping behind the scenes more than being on the stage. I actually went to Nashville School of the Arts for acting and piano. My passion for the arts has always been all over the place.
