Rising Stars: Meet Amy M Phillips and Fairlight Hubbard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy M Phillips and Fairlight Hubbard.

Hi Amy and Fairlight, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We each started as models ourselves but have worn many hats throughout the years in the fashion and modeling industries. This varied from High Fashion Retail Editor for Mode Magazine to fashion design. We met as model/fashion educators and quickly found a creative connection. This eventually led us to establish a full production photography service for model development, where we used our creative talents doing hair and make-up, styling, design, directing, and photography all while traveling the country and scouting models. This is when we established EYE to be a full-service Mother Agency and advocate for aspiring talent. Since forming EYE in 2000, we have scouted and successfully managed hundreds of model careers.

Most recently, we have acquired a historic location where we now operate the agency as well as our creative studio where we photograph models and artists. This beautiful space is also available to rent for creative endeavors and events.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This is great question. In truth, our business was born because of the struggles we both experienced in the industry itself. The modeling industry was in need of reform and in the years since, we have seen things come a long way. We wanted to be a part of this change and to offer guidance and management to our models. We believe all models should have someone looking out for their best interest. Our story is one of advocacy first and foremost. In an industry where models are scouted young and careers can bloom fast, protecting and nurturing the models growth and development as a person first, model second, is our utmost goal. We believe this approach creates a healthy relationship for a model with his/her career and in the long run creates lasting success. As Mother agents, we by nature, are the ones who work to overcome struggles and work through challenges. Whether it is daily conflict in models apartments, dealing with self-esteem, body issues, relationships with bookers… you name it, it is vast, but that is what we are here for. Models know they can rely on us and we are here to put out fires.

As far as personal struggles, we both agree balancing being owners of a business while being mothers to our children presents its own challenges. There have been numerous photoshoots in the past where our children would travel with us across the country in order for us to be present as mothers and also continue to work and grow our business. On the plus side, our children have been cultured in a unique way from these experiences and funny enough, they can model, take pictures, scout models and do makeup because of this emersion. For better or worse, they have become miniature versions of us!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, in truth, we do a variety of things. We are creatives and agents. These things go hand in hand. We specialize in fashion photography and artist development. We do everything in house including hair and make-up, styling, photography, video, design, and branding. We are known for our work within the modeling and music community. We would like to think that our ability to do all of these things collectively sets us apart as creators. As agents, what sets us apart is our ability to scout and develop models and also that we lead with advocacy. We both agree that what we are most proud of is what we have built over the last two decades. The relationships we have established in our industry and with our models are a testament to our hard work and dedication. In addition, we are proud of our code of ethics within a competitive industry. We have put people before profit and it has allowed us to stay true to our goals as a Mother Agent and to ourselves as artists.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
As restrictions have lowered and things are opening back up in our industry, we are also opening our doors at a new location. All of our photography and artist development services are available again and we are actively scouting and seeking new talent for our agency. In addition, our new space is available for rentals for photoshoots and creative events. We are excited to be open and looking forward to creating again!
