Today we’d like to introduce you to April Rose Gabrielli and Jacob Kulick. They and their team shared their story with us below:
We’re both solo artists, writers & producers. Jacob Kulick with SONY/Enci Records and April Rose Gabrielli with BMG. We initially met in 2018 when we played a show together in New York. We set a date to write and our first song “Scatterbrain” was cut as a single for Jacob’s project with RCA. We toured together shortly after and continued to write and produce for each other’s projects. In early 2021 after April’s single “Do You?” was released, other artists were reaching out asking who the producers were because they were interested in creating a similar sound.
Although we had both been producing music separately for years prior, this was one of our first co-productions. Weeks later we booked our first paid production client and we’ve been busy as “The Pear” ever since. We relocated to Nashville in May of 2023 and partnered with Jeff Peterson’s Interstate Music to write and produce out of a proper studio on Music Row. Our workdays usually consist of mixing, mastering, writing sessions, producing, and recording sessions. We work in multiple genres from country, to folk, to pop, to metal. We cannot be more appreciative of the way Nashville has embraced us and continues to as we grow.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everybody has their challenges along the way and we’ve certainly had ours. We are grateful for the opportunity to overcome challenges along the way as it inherently strengthens the work we do. Jacob was born with Sensory Neural hearing loss in both ears and has been learning and creating music with the help of hearing aids to correct his ability to only hear about half of what the average person does. Shortly after our first tour concluded, quarantine commenced in 2020 and shut down the touring music industry for the unforeseeable future.
In late 2020, April was diagnosed with epilepsy and spent months in and out of the ICU during the height of the pandemic and Jacob was suddenly a full-time caretaker. Having signed a publishing deal from the hospital bed, production and writing on April’s first full-length album was also in full swing at the height of this health crisis.
We made it happen despite all of the uncertainties and within the next year we both had albums out retelling what we had experienced: “I Woke Up Alive,” and “Everyone I Know Will Die.” Luckily we have each other to push through every tough day whether it’s personal or work-related. We’re grateful for our health and all of the art we’re able to create as a result of our experiences. We’ve all got something.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We approach production from the artist’s perspective. Having worked in other studios as artists for many years, we understand the common pitfalls and disconnections that are sometimes associated with the process. Our top priority is bringing the artist’s vision to life and not pushing them in any direction. Instead, we like to help guide them toward who they want to be and develop in the long term.
We love creating sounds for artists and creating a world that feels like their own. We’re proud of being able to foster the creativity of other artists as producers and writers while also being focused on our work as artists. We both agree that our production and writing work has helped inspire and grow our solo music projects.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Jacob: Socializing is important.
April: Rest is important.
