Today we’d like to introduce you to Bri Aspen.
Hi Bri, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I spent the majority of my life as a competitive golfer. I began singing and writing songs when I was eight years old, but my goal of becoming a college golfer always served as my top priority. Eventually, I was able to play division one college golf at Belmont University and graduated in May of this year. Throughout my time in college, I continued writing songs and producing them with a good friend of mine, Chris Evers. My senior year, I released my first single “Red Rubies” at the height of the golf season and was able to live out my dreams of being both a college golfer and a musician. Since graduating, I have been able to focus entirely on my music career and have gotten to play at amazing venues in town such as The Basement and Tin Roof. In the few months I have been doing music full time, I have gained a monthly listener count of 7,000 and am sitting at over 16,000 streams on my newest single “Back at the Start”.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I often struggled with balancing my time as a college athlete and musician. During college I often worried that my passions would fall through the cracks, but through hard work and consistency I was able to continue writing and releasing music, even on the busiest of days.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter who writes music with introspective lyrics and soulful melodies. I am known for writing songs with intense emotional themes and vulnerable lyrics. I have huge influences from both Adele and Noah Kahan, and my songs ride the line between these two artists.
I am most proud of the writing in my song “Back at the Start”. I wrote this song about the feeling of devastation after one’s first breakup. This song truly encapsulates that distinct feeling of heartbreak and is incredibly cathartic to sing. The lyric “I would have peeled the bones from my skin and handed you them if it would keep you from touching my heart” is one of my favorites I have written.
What sets me apart is my vulnerability and honesty in my writing. Writing about my most raw experiences have allowed me to connect with my audience and shown me how alike we all are at the end of the day.
My experience in college golf has taught me a resilience that is absolutely necessary in the music industry. Though this business has its difficulties, I know I can persevere.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have had incredible luck with the people I have met in my life and business. I was lucky enough to meet Chris Evers my freshman year of college, and since then he has continuously supported my career in every way possible. He now serves as my producer and A&R rep, but most importantly he encourages me to chase my dreams every day.
