Rising Stars: Meet Brotherhood Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brotherhood Designs.

Hello Brotherhood Designs, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
We are Scott Carr and Rob Demlow. Our company is Brotherhood Designs, LLC. We have over 40 years of combined service as professional firefighters in central Indiana. With over a decade working together, we have spent countless hours on shift as well as outside of work with our families. We have learned to be smooth in operational work professionally, and over time, found that we have an eye for creativity. We started to see that we had a tendency to complete and support each other’s visions when doing projects. We started with a few station logo projects that kept us busy during downtime on shift. For fun, in 2018 we decided to use our passion for creative expression and pride of our country to make a work of art using hose and other items used in our profession which otherwise might end up in a landfill. We dedicated an American flag to our station that was made with decommissioned fire hose that had been used to preserve life and property on the job.

In our off-time from the firehouse, we discovered Nashville a few years back. Upon experiencing the excitement and enjoyment of live entertainment, we found ourselves at a home away from home, and knew this would be somewhere that we would frequently visit! During one of our trips in 2021, we started making connections with local venues and artists. These connections enabled us to be able to display our artwork and love of country in this beautiful city and share with its visitors from all around the world! With a newly found demand for patriotism and our artwork, this adventure officially became a business on February 9, 2022. As you walk down Broadway, you can currently find our artwork in a few of our favorite establishments!

Our work is dedicated to all the heroes who work in professions like ours for the benefit of public service. As you look through the pictures of some of our projects, you will see how they have evolved and will continue to evolve with customized, decorative art that has a story and meaning. You can choose from an itemized list of options that you would like your flag to have, and we are always open to other ideas that you are interested in to meet your personal desires. Our ultimate goal is for you to be proud to display your creation in honor of your heroes and your country.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The first struggle was making the decision to take this from a hobby to a business. Since forming the LLC, our struggle lately has been how quickly can we grow versus family time and supply issues. Between creating prototypes and patents for our specific designs for our product lines, crates for shipping, finding and establishing shipping partners, deciding how large our business can be, and creating a quality product that will match the potential that we feel we have. The main struggle we have since we are infants in this new world is how do we take advantage of the tremendous opportunities we have been given.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are career firefighters that recycle old, defective fire hose that can no longer be used on the job. We use this hose to create patriotic works of art that symbolize our love for this great country. Each flag tells its own story as each section of hose may be ripped, burned, and scarred from the service it provided to the citizens it protected. We specialize in turning those imperfections into beautiful artwork. We are known for delivering a quality product line designed uniquely for each client. We are most proud of the relationships and friendships we’ve made along the way in this short time since this journey began. The attention to detail with each flag that we create is what sets us apart from others.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson that we’ve probably learned along the way is to be patient with the process of starting and running a business. We wanted to create a product that was unique to us in the way that we build them, and it’s been a learning curve in doing so and getting it correct. With the time we’ve spent designing and then adjusting that design, we feel like we’ve created a special, unique work of art that you would not only be happy to display in your home or office but also excited enough about to share with others!
