Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherith Wooten.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Mississippi and, like many people, spent years trying to figure out where I truly belonged. I attended college and studied Business Administration, believing that was the path I was supposed to take. After school, I wore many different hats—from working in banking to serving as a teacher’s assistant. Each role taught me something valuable, but none of them felt like the place where I was meant to stay.
Looking for a new adventure, I moved to Nashville. Like so many people who come here chasing a dream, I was searching for mine. I worked at the Hard Rock Cafe on Broadway, surrounded by the energy, creativity, and ambition that make Nashville so special. It was an exciting season, but deep down, I knew I wanted something more.
I’ve always loved fashion, beauty, and creativity. Hair felt like a natural extension of those passions. Looking back, it makes perfect sense. I’ve always been artistic and drawn to creating things with my hands. My Memaw, my great-grandmother, was a painter, and I like to think I inherited some of that artistic spirit from her. In many ways, hair became my canvas. Every color formula, highlight placement, and transformation is a chance to create something unique.
After attending Paul Mitchell and beginning my career behind the chair, I quickly realized I had found what I was meant to do. What surprised me most was how closely connected the worlds of music and hair really are. As a stylist working on Music Row, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many musicians, songwriters, and creatives. I quickly discovered that musicians and hairstylists often run in the same circles. Both industries are fueled by creativity, self-expression, storytelling, and a little bit of hustle.
Being surrounded by artists has inspired me throughout my career. Whether someone is stepping on stage, walking into a writer’s round, heading into a photo shoot, or simply wanting to feel their best, I love helping people show up confidently as themselves. Hair has allowed me to combine business, artistry, and human connection in a way that none of my previous careers ever could.
Today, more than 15 years into my career, I still feel grateful that I took the leap. What started as a search for the right path became a calling. My goal has never been just to do great hair. I want every person who sits in my chair to leave feeling more confident, empowered, and beautiful than when they walked in
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road definitely hasn’t been perfectly smooth. Like many entrepreneurs and independent contractors, I’ve had seasons where business was thriving and seasons where I questioned everything. Being a hairstylist isn’t just about doing hair. You’re also running a business, building relationships, marketing yourself, continuing your education, and finding ways to stay inspired creatively.
Beyond the professional challenges, I’ve experienced significant personal loss. Losing my brother to suicide and later losing my father unexpectedly changed me in ways I never anticipated. Grief has a way of reshaping your perspective on life, relationships, and what truly matters.
Those experiences taught me resilience. They taught me to keep showing up even when things are hard. They taught me the importance of giving people grace because you never know what someone is carrying. I think those lessons have made me not only a better person but a better stylist. Many times clients come into my chair carrying their own struggles, and I understand the value of having a safe place to sit, talk, laugh, cry, and simply be yourself.
I’ve also learned that your path doesn’t have to make sense to everyone else. If someone had told me years ago that a girl from Mississippi with a business degree would end up building a career on Music Row as a hairstylist working with creatives and musicians, I probably wouldn’t have believed them. But sometimes the best things happen when you’re willing to follow what lights you up.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in customized color, blonding, lived-in hair, and extensions. My goal is always to create hair that not only looks beautiful when a client leaves the salon but continues to work for their lifestyle long after the appointment.
What sets me apart is the experience I try to create. I want people to feel like they’re spending time with a friend, not just sitting in a salon chair. Some of my favorite moments happen during the conversations. Over the years, I’ve celebrated engagements, weddings, babies, career changes, and life’s biggest milestones right alongside my clients.
Working on Music Row has also given me the opportunity to work with artists, musicians, and creatives who inspire me every day. Creativity looks different for everyone, but confidence is universal. Whether someone is preparing for a performance, a photoshoot, an important meeting, or simply wants to feel like the best version of themselves, I love being a small part of helping them get there.
At the end of the day, I don’t just sell a service. I help people feel beautiful, confident, and seen. That’s what keeps me passionate about what I do after all these years.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
What matters most to me is people.
Hair has always been about more than hair for me. Of course I love the creativity, the transformations, and the artistry, but the relationships are what keep me going. Some of my clients have been with me for years. I’ve watched their families grow, celebrated their successes, and walked alongside them through difficult seasons.
I also believe that every person deserves to feel confident and beautiful. Sometimes something as simple as fresh hair can completely change how someone feels about themselves. Being able to contribute to that confidence is something I never take for granted.
If my clients leave my chair feeling a little more beautiful, a little more confident, and a little more loved than when they arrived, then I’ve done my job.
