Today we’d like to introduce you to Columbus Cody
Columbus, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a graduate of MNPS (Hunters Lane Hight School). I joined the US Navy after high school. I served my country and returned home to start college at Tennessee State University. I began teaching in 2002. I’ve taught at the Elementary, Middle and High School levels. I am a husband of 17 years and a father to 2 boys (15 and 12). I am an author, speaker, podcast host, and YouTube content creator. I serve in my local church in many different ways. My passion is to share the gospel in ways that it is easy to understand and enjoyable to learn.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I am tremendously blessed and have no complaints. I’ve had smooth parts and rough parts on my journey. Being an educator is a very challenging yet rewarding vocation. Being a father and husband has it’s challenges and hardships as well especially when you want to do things honorably. In January of 2025 my youngest son (12) had to have open heart surgery. That was a very tense time, yet God granted me a peace I cannot explain. Trying to model and lead two young African American boys toward being strong men of integrity is also very overwhelming at times. I pray often that I do not fail them as a father but that I prepare them for a world that may not see their value.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a physical education teacher. I’ve been teaching for over 2 decades. I feel like teaching is a gift that God has given me. I have the ability to forge relationships with my students that leads to me being able to hold them to a high standard and push them toward being their best selves. It is my joy to see students that do not necessarily like physical activity grow to love the things I expose them to. I have been name Teacher of the Year 2 times. (As a physical educator we are often overlooked in our buildings so being honored with this award 2 times is something that I cherish because I know my peers see the work that I’ve put in and how it impacts our student body.)
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
My greatest desire is to become a highly sought out inspirational speaker. I want to encourage as many people as possible.
