Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Hooper.
Hi Denise, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a Makeup Artist by trade but I am also a daydreamer, creative, traveler, shop owner, beauty lover, beauty blogger, amateur photographer and collector of life stories.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Launching my shop was an easy decision because I was craving another creative outlet besides my makeup career.
Keeping the business going while working full-time as a makeup artist can be a struggle in moments as far as time and energy. I work on the shop every chance I get… giving up is not an option. Having a little brick-and-mortar is my end goal so that dream keeps me going. I will eventually leave the entertainment business and move out of LA with the idea of owning a shop somewhere. Maybe Nashville..maybe Mendocino~
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been a makeup artist for 20+ years. Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time discovering new products, meeting brand founders, reviewing skincare and curating my social media pages. I am always so inspired by women in business, especially those who quit their day jobs to follow a dream. I’ve been a beauty junkie since I was a kid watching my mom apply her Maybelline eyeshadows and playing with all of her perfumes. It’s not surprising that my favorite part about makeup artististry are the products & packaging. I just added another side hustle to the line-up with a Beauty Blog. blushpainter.com
As a shop owner and creative. Currently, my shop is online. I carry small brands and makers and a few designers from Mexico. I recently added a selection of Found Goods which has been fun because I love the hunt for treasures. I grew up going to flea markets and antique shops with my mom so I feel like it’s in my DNA. I was just visiting friends and family in the Nashville area. I curated a list of Antique shops, markets, second-hand stores, coffee spots, drinks, eats and pretty neighborhoods to explore.
The next couple of years will dictate where the direction of my life and career will go. I’ve learned so many lessons along the way and for now, I’ll continue to straddle the entrepreneurial life with my makeup artist life.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have so many great childhood memories. I was a girl scout obsessed with getting badges. I have amazing memories of playing softball and competing on a swim team. My dad took us on incredible road trips. I was an amateur photographer from a young age and loved making photo albums…when photo albums were a thing!
We always had music playing at home. I have most of my parent’s albums & I love playing them on my record player…it’s so nostalgic.
