Rising Stars: Meet Dr. Tanner Simmons of Brentwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tanner Simmons.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a Nashville native, growing up in the Crieve Hall neighborhood. I was always interested in science and the medical field, even since middle school. I went to college in Nashville at Lipscomb University as an Exercise Science major. After shadowing a few different medical fields, I fell in love with physical therapy. I was active in high school, playing football, soccer, and track, so the gym setting really appealed to me. The biggest motivating factor was the relational bond I get to form with my patients. Unfortunately most positions in the medical field are limited in how much time they actually get to spend with their patients (Dentist, Pharmacist, etc.). As a physical therapist, I get to spend several hours with my patients over the course of their care. This allows me to really get to know them and form great relationships with all my patients. It is also very hands on and rewarding in the fact that I get to see my patients make objective progress throughout their care. My wife and I both are physical therapists, graduating from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center with our Doctor of Physical Therapy. When we moved back to Nashville is when I decided to open my own practice. I had the dream of creating the ideal environment for both patient care as well as a practice that providers would thrive in. I also have been very blessed in my life and feel called to give back to the community. Through opening my own business, this has allowed me to reinvest a portion of our profits to cover seeing patients pro bono who can’t otherwise afford or have access to physical therapy!.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was scary quitting my solid full time job to go out on my own with my wife expecting our first child. There was definitely a learning curve and a few tight months, but we made it out to the other side doing better than ever!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Physical Therapy is all about restoring functioning, from walking to competitive sports and everything in between. Whether you are limited by pain, stiffness, or weakness, physical therapy is the ideal setting for anybody looking to achieve a physical goal. I specialize in musculoskeletal conditions- that is anything related to a muscle or a joint. I work a lot with athletes(golfers specifically) as well as high performance weight lifters! What makes me different is my practice is located in a gym, so I am fully equipped to help people return to the highest level of performance! I always see my clients 1:1 for a full hour to make sure they receive the highest level of care I can provide.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Spending a week hiking two 14,000 ft mountains in Colorado with a group of my best friends from church.
