Rising Stars: Meet Evan Hull of Murfreesboro/Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Hull

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Like most children, I had very little interest in what my parents did. I felt a strong connection to music from games and TV shows, but my real interests lay elsewhere: basketball. It took a broken wrist and several bad seasons to show me the big picture. I wasn’t an athlete. Back to video games I went for the next few months, and as I was playing Rock Band I had an epiphany, why sit here and play a fake instrument, when there’s a real one in the room next to me! The next few months I sounded like Animal from The Muppets creating a cacophony of sound with bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Breaking Benjamin. It was then I tried my hand amongst stringed instruments when I felt I had found my true calling. My mom showed me a few chords and Guitar had my heart from that point on. That was 12 years ago, and I’ve gone from playing fake bars in Rock Band, to playing The Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman, and countless stadiums, clubs, casinos, and theatres. And more recently, producing artists, and composing for TV and Advertising

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m one of the blessed few who’s had supportive parents already in the business, who gave me advice and shared their experiences with me so I didn’t have to go into this world unprepared. We’ve all made our mistakes and (hopefully) learned from them, but I’d say it’s been relatively smooth so far. Who else can say they get to do what they love everyday? Even if there are major challenges that arise, any of them immediately gets outweighed by the pure love of the craft, in my eyes.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a musician/producer/composer/caped crusader by night? Alright, maybe not that last one, but a guy can dream.

As uncomfortable as I am talking about myself, I love making music in any and all forms. I play Guitar, Bass, and Drums fluently (keys a little). I’m a Creative Director at a music house called Howling Music. I have production experience with nearly millions of streams, and also some placements on TV and streaming services, and touring experience in every state of the US and parts of Canada, and even studio experience in Nashville and Paris. I’ve played with artists either live or in studio such as Lee Greenwood, Ty Herndon, Jamie O Neal, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Vince Gill, TG Sheppard, T Graham Brown, and many more.

I think something that sets me apart is, thanks to my love of music, and musical parents, I have quite a wide range of genre knowledge. Not limited to playing styles and recording facts. I play with several artists that started in the 1970s, and have really grown to devote my time to capture the subtle nuances of music across any time period. My dad, Andy Hull, taught me to be as versatile as possible, so I’ve tried to learn as many styles of music as I can, so no matter what I’m asked to play, I don’t stand out like a sore thumb. You’ll hear the phrase “Jack of all trades, master of none” but people often forget the full phrase: “but oftentimes better than a master of one”

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m not much of a podcast person, but the Songexploder podcast is a great resource to hear how some of the pros handle writing and production. Same with the gearspace forum, I’ve been on that website since I was a pup. And I’ve learned so much from stalking old forums where my favorite producers chimed in.
