Today we’d like to introduce you to Gemma Rose Downes.
Gemma Rose, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was always a huge fan of music from an early age but later down the line, it became more of a passion for me. It was one day, I was scrolling through Twitter and came across an unsigned artist called, Jessica Bell from Blackpool, her vocals and talent were incredible so my mind kind of went, “Where is the support for unsigned artists and bands?” That’s all I kept saying to myself scrolling through and I began listening to a lot of unsigned artists.
So in 2012, I was fourteen and managed to secure Jess a support slot at the Manchester Academy and from there I started to promote artists and bands through my personal social media then 2014 came about and Music Of The Future was born with it also being abbreviated to Music of The Future or MOTF to some. The independent music scene led me to think that it is such a difficult industry for independent artists, especially if you have a little budget this was another reason I created Music Of The Future for those Independent artists who struggle with budget and do not have the help from labels and others with this being said MOTF grew and we do have signed artist come to us for features.
So, in 2014, I created Music of The Future for that purpose. To offer features to bands and artists to share their music in an affordable way. Music of the Future is an independent music blog for artists and bands that are unable to afford high-cost promotion, Music of The Future offers a bunch of features including interviews, reviews, Music of The Future Global TV (YouTube Feature), MOTF Takeovers, MOTF Virtual Concerts, Video of The Week, Sundays shoutout videos on our Facebook page every hour of the day, MusicOTFuture Spotify and Soundcloud Playlists.
We also recently launched Music of The Future Gigs Around the Globe where we share the latest shows from around the world. We also have a page called MusicOTFuture ‘Useful Links’ where we share other people’s work who could potentially help the artist/bands with their services. Also, Music of The Future covers all music genres, so everyone has a chance at getting a feature! As of today, Music of The Future is still growing and more ideas are flowing… keep your eyes peeled.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This is an industry that is never smooth sailing, There are ups and there are downs… probably more downs but with every down you have you bounce back stronger without a doubt, It’s a rollercoaster of adrenaline and for me, I think you have to have thick skin to survive especially being a women in the industry.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is mostly known through the Music of The Future which has been going for 7 years and counting which has led me to branch out into the music scene. From featuring artists and bands for an interview, review, or blog feature who are unsigned to artists/bands who are known but primarily focuses on unsigned or independent artists/bands. This led me to do some small tours, solo shows, and online virtual shows through Music of The Future.
Alongside this, I managed to branch out into PA work for Acting Talent.
In 2018, was a big year for me as I was also a finalist in the Greater Manchester Business Awards for Young Business Person of The Year for my business Music Of The Future. This is a moment I’m proud of because I made it to the final three and was blown away that my work had been recognized especially with the industry I’m in.
What sets me apart I would say is honesty is the best policy, I always say it how it is and people always say that I give good advice.
