Rising Stars: Meet George Shingleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Shingleton.

Hi George, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am from coal country in West Virginia. I grew up playing music in church, and it branched out into country music when I was around the age of 20. I didn’t think anything about playing music for a living until I met my wife, Emily. She really encouraged me to pursue a career in songwriting and performing. I quit my day job in 2008 and have been creating and playing music ever since. We ended up moving to Nashville in 2011, and so far I think we made a good move.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not always been smooth travels on this path. Between being really homesick the first few years of living here, deaths in our families, and the financial struggles of the business, there have definitely been times when I’ve wanted to throw in the towel and go home.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I try to make music that is authentic to me but relatable to the masses. I feel the more honest it is, the easier it’ll be for folks to get it. I’m not sure that I specialize in anything in particular, but I definitely sound country no matter what genre of music I’m playing, at least that’s what I’m told. I’m honestly kinda proud of that, ’cause in today’s world, that’ll set you apart from other country artists. My new single, “Talkin’ Whiskey,” is out February 11, 2022.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking has definitely never been a characteristic of mine. To date, my biggest risk was probably quitting my job and diving headfirst into music full-time. I’ve always been a dreamer on the sidelines, watching others take what seemed to be the risks that I wanted to, but was too scared to. I’m pretty content with that, though.
