Rising Stars: Meet Hattie “Hat” Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hattie “Hat” Harris.

Hat, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My Cozy Place was founded in the early stages of Covid-19. Like many Americans, my livelihood was shook upside-down finding myself without a corporate career and trying to understand and map out what’s next. I started to DIY around my own home.

Designing has always been a passion of mind, thinking if I could create such beautiful designs on a large platform such as hospitality, I can definitely make my home and others as cozy as possible. Once I started, creating my own cozy place my following grew and people started to inquiry. Seriously, it was alarming how many people. So I created, MCP with one thought in mind, if we had to stay home, I wanted to make it home.

Fast forward to a year in a half in, I have designed homes and businesses from Atlanta to Memphis. Learning more and falling more and more in love with the art as well as craft each day.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Let’s just say, the road taken has been somewhat interesting potholes here and there, stand still traffic, and some days are so long as if I’m driving cross country. However, I would not change it. Like many business owners, especially in the design world. We have been faced with many challenges such as delays with inventory, finding great help, and even just staying healthy. Keeping myself and my team healthy is huge. One C-19 spread could lead to two-week delays for my clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a home designer that specializes in Modern Interior and Exterior designs. I am most known for exterior patios.

My favorite accomplishment is how I have basically taken the drive from my passion and created an entire business from it. It’s waking up everyday and stating, I am doing something that terrifies me but I am doing it. It makes me comfortable to be uncomfortable. I know that sounds crazy, but I love the rush it gives me when a client sees their space for the first time or creating a vision concept for a client and they absolutely love it without even a single purchase yet.

I would love to say that my ability to give a dull space life again sets me apart, which in fact it does but what I truly feel sets me apart is my relationship and bond that I create with my clients. I am just a small business in a big world. Having my clients trust me, with not only large budgets but with their home something that is so near to their heart is overwhelming sometimes. During MCP design process, my clients and I are basically having to communicate all the time regarding designs, timelines, and deliverables. it could be months of working together. So during this time, I take the time out to actually build relationships and get to know clients. So at the end, they say my friend designed my home.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
As for the next 5-10 years, my industry will evolve at an alarming rate. People are staying home more, working from home more, and entertaining more. So people are wanting to have their home speak volumes about who they are. Hiring a designer creates those volumes that you may couldn’t speak for yourself.

As for trends and styles, MODERN whether modern contemporary or Modern with a hint of Luxe. Modern is always in. I do believe colors are going to take large shift in design, meaning bold is the new color white, gray and black. We are not afraid to go there anymore.
