Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Hillhouse.
Hi Heather, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started this little photography business of mine back in the fall of 2011. I had some families and sports organizations asking me to take their photos, and so I decided to take steps towards creating my own business. I will never forget how exciting it was to see my business name on that first business card.
I just kept taking every job as they would come, and it was a very slow build. Around 2014, I started working more in event photography and I loved it so much that I decided to concentrate my marketing on events and corporate gigs here in Nashville.
Fast forward to 2026, and I am a full time photographer here in Nashville, with events and corporate being my main gigs, but I always say, “I don’t say no to much.” I love the adventure of never knowing what saying yes to something will bring.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would not call it smooth. I would call it long, slow going, but worth the wait.
The struggles were and are: “I am only as employed as my next email.”
As a freelancer, if I have a contract, it is usually very short lived. There is a lot of working on maintaining a good website, good relationships, and trying to establish new ones! But, I am really content with where I am at now, with the always hope of growth around the corner. Still getting a slow build of new clients and working with established ones that I love to work with.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a freelance photographer that specializes in events, corporate, portrait, and sports. I have always been an observer, and my brain seems to want to frame everyday life as a scene from a movie. I am proud of this business I have built in the freelance world and that people seem to like and respect my artistic approach to documenting. I think what sets me a part is just simply that I am me. We each bring something special to this profession, and that is our own view of the world.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, it is my go to for joy. I have based my business methods around Jasmine Star’s words, blogs, and podcast.
